Hi, my 1.9JTD bravo just failed its MOT on excessive smoke.

The readings were:-

Test Smoke
1. 5.29 1/m
2. 4.56 1/m
3. 3.55 1/m
4. 3.18 1/m
5. 3.76 1/m
6. 3.06 1/m

Zero Drift 0.05 1/m

Mean Value 3.29 1/m

The car has been sitting on the drive for a week waiting for its MOT and has very little diesel left it in.

I have no idea what the problem is and I am hoping that it is because it hasn't been run and the diesel in it is from the bottom of the tank. From the readings I get the impression that its lowering as it runs for longer, but I am not entirely sure.

Anyone got any ideas?

Would appreciate any help at this time.

Thanks Lee

1) Book retest;
2) Fill tank to about halfway;
3) Get full service done;
4) 1 hour before MOT take car for a long drive and give it some beans, planning a route that will ensure the car gets up to temp and a mixture of driving styles. Ensure last part of route takes you back to test centre just before MOT and is high speed;
5) Leave engine running when you get to MOT centre until they take it in to test and ask if they can do emmissions test first;
6) Walk away with new MOT likely as not.
If this fails then there is probably a deeper issue.

Hi, what is involved in a full service? as I do not really have money to get one done and was wondering what I could do myself.

Does anyone understand the readings (from the MOT fail certificate) that I put up in my first post?

The numbers you state above are middle blacking of the exhaust - translated from my language. In short it states that your car has too much unburned particles in the exhaust fumes.

To do:

1. new diesel filter -can do yourself
2. new air filter - can do yourself
3. oil and filter - can do yourself
4. full tank of diesel and 2-3 days trashing the car so it cleans the exhaust ducts, engine, cat and injectors.

Hey, diesel filter was only done 1500 miles ago, so its just the other two to do then.

As my MOT has run out, I cant legally thrash it, what other things can I do to clear out the unburned particles?

Warm up the engine, then rev it to cca 4000 rpm and holding it on that rpm for 4-5 sec then release the throttle and so on for 10-20 times.

would you recommend that I have it running for a long amount of time before the retest, and then thrash it on the way to the MOT centre and leave it running as long as possible, or should it be pretty much cleaned out after the revving on the driveway?

is this excessive smoke a common thing?

Has it just been bad timing for myself or do you think that because the car has not done much for a week?

Its not unusual especially if you drive in town only, the when you go to the freeway it gets cleaned and its OK for a while and so on.

Well I only drive 3miles a day, when i do use the car and I spend most that time in traffic so that would explain it.

If changing the filters etc and giving the car a good blast doesn't solve the problem does any one have any ideas what the problem could be?

hi

hi am a mot tester , just give it alot of stick for a week and youll find it will fly through if you dont give diesels enough hammer they sut up and and then when a tester revs it to the limiter and off again it throws it out give it a good run and i bet it goes through

Lee... trust me on this - as a previous JTD owner with a 150bhp remap - everyone on here that saw my car knows it smoked LOTS!!!!

You can drive the car to the MOT how you bloody like.... thrashing it doesn't mean hi speed, it means hi revs... and don't worry you can't break a diesel as it has a govener which prevents the engine blowing up.

Start the car up, let it warm up. drive to the MOT in 2nd or 3rd at 4,000rpm.

This will clear out all the soot and should pass the MOT fine.

Where about are you? If im passing your way I can come help or I can suggest a garage who will "help" in the warming up of the car :)

But seriously, I drove my JTD to the red line everyday and really gave it some stick - never failed an MOT and AFAIK it's still going like a train with 150k on the clock!

And YES, I would love you yellow bravo... sell it to me!!!!! pleaseeeeeeeeeeee :)

I am never going to sell it, its still my first car and I have been driving for 5 years...absolutely love it.

So basically give my car a good bit of revving and it should clear it out. The local Mr Clutch where I get my MOT (as its only £25) is only about a minute away from my house, so I should probably find a longer route?

I live in Medway, Kent.

just to add, since no-one has mentioned additives. You'll presumably be putting a tank of fuel in it before you give it some hard driving, so pour in a bottle of forte diesel fuel treatment as this will help clean through the fuel system and injectors, and also it burns cleaner than derv so having some in your fuel when its being mot'd helps.

plus, all of the above. (oil/air/fuel filter change and a good thrash.)

i had problems with my car! all it needed was a service and passed str8 away!

Hi, I have now got the replacement air filter, oil filter and oil and I was wondering if there was a guide on here for changing the air filter?

If there is can somebody send me the link as I have been unable to find it.

At the same time (I know I sound really simple) can someone let me know where the oil filter is located?
