Any thoughts about this car? Anyone knows how reliable is the Selespeed in the Alfa 159....

Cheers...

They're big and heavy, I know that much.

Not sure about the selespeed models these days, the old 'ens were a bit of a problem area. I imagine they have updated the system to try and over come the early issues.

I wouldn't own an Alfa out of warranty. Infact, I don't think I'll own another one again!!!

I forgot to mention, the 2.4 20v Ti model is the used one I'd go for, if buying new then check out the benzina turbo engine. :)

Thanks, mate for the info...unfortunately the only model available in Malaysia is 2.2JTS with Selespeed gearbox. Test drove it twice and really impressed with its performance and gear changing compared to the Alfa 147 Selespeed I tested sometime in 2002. Obviously Alfa has improved the Selespeed gearbox but how reliable is it compared to the Alfa 156 which it replaces.

I have never driven one myself but I have been a passenger and they seem to be really good cars.

As it was built while a german was in charge it seems to be a lot more reliable now and apparently the electrics actually work!

I thik they are great cars but I'm still not sure abotu the selespeed box

Apparently, the chassis was built in partnership with saab only saab dropped out later in the development.

I've heard that the chasis is stronger than a land rovers and 'over engineered'?! It helps explain the weight.

The JTS engines are a little down on the claimed BHP figures. 185bhp is more like 165bhp. I had a 2.0 JTS that was similarly down on power.

Not bad engines at all, seem to be quite reliable.

The 164 chassis was shared with the Saab 9000. Modern Saabs chassis share with other GM cars.

The Brera chassis (which the 159 uses) is very stiff and does handle well.

Hi MG,

Was yours with the Selespeed gearbox? It was a great drive when I tested it but I was just wondering how reliable are they?

Got the Alfa 159 2.2JTS with selespeed gearbox...brilliant car...sold of my Fiat Brava 1.8ELX after 13 years of ownership...sad day to see it leave my hands though...

Gurjit, You traitor! You should be out there supporting P1 by buying either a Waja, Saga or Persona! LOL

Seriously, hope you enjoy your new 159, they certainly are handsome.
I only owned an Alfa once, (a 1997 boxer-engined 146) and it was a good and reliable car over many miles
- despite it being very much an 'Alfa' and so needing quite alot of maintanence...
