Hi All,

Had my outer CV joints changed and now the ASB light comes on. Mechanic connected it to the computer thingy and got the above message for both front wheels.

He is going to try blowing out the sensors to see if they are covered in crap but have any of you any ideas?

Thanks

Conrad

3 things come to mind:

1. The CV joint that he changed ain't got the ABS ring on it.
2. The distance from the ABS sensor head to the ABS ring on the CV joint is too big.
3. He broke the sensor while working.

Did he reset the error ? Is it back again ?

Thakns Sven,

It is a MK2 1.8 if that helps. I have had trouble finding the correct CV joints due to the location of the circlip. Would 1.8 cv joints be available without ABS?

Regards

Conrad

Thanks again Sven,

I'll show these to my mechanic to see it he can decided which he has fitted.

It may be worth noting that on the dash Both the ASB and Handbrake warning lights are on. According to the owners handbook this indicates a problem with the Electronic Braking Device.

It advises me in the handbook to drive slowly and carefully to the nearest Fiat Dealership. I presume this is to have my wallet surgically removed!

Hi People, especially Sven,

I have taken those diagrams to my mechanic. He says that the CV joints he took off the car did not have that ASB ring round the outside of the CV joint and that the company who supplied the replacements had my old ones as a pattern when they sourced the new ones.

He said that it appeared that the ASB sensor on the car was aligned with the driveshaft rather than the CV joint casing.

Help! Would my chassic number etc help at all! I need to find the right part.

Thanks

Conrad

Hi Sven.

I have noted the numbers off the plate on the front panel under the bonnet:

e3*96/12*0019*07
ZFA182000*04933718
Motor:182V2-000
Version:182AC1AA 03G
No. for Spares: 4906007

Thanks

Conrad

Hi Sven,

Many thanks for the info and yes, I have driven the car.

Conrad

Conrad here is your problem.
Please bleed the brakes while the car is on the ground and change the brake oil. Also check the connector on the ABS pump while the car is not running. Also check the big fuses under the bonnet and get a diag done at fiat.

Okay,

I'll get that all looked at. Just a thought but might there be a difference between LH and RH joints and they have been put on the wrong sides?

In googling phonic ABS I saw a post relating to a Fiat which suggested that someone with a problem with their phonic ABS had fitted LH and RH wheel bearings the on the wrong sides.

Regards

Conrad

I had the ABS light on after that same service.
Im my case it was the mechanic that broke the sensor while mounting/dismounting.
result = new sensor. About 40£

i had exactly same problem on my 1.8mk2 hlx when i bought about 5 yr ago. turned out garage before had fitted incorrect driveshaft- fitted non abs model and Fiat Foxfield in wigan figured this out- fitted correct driveshaft and wheel sensor for abs :)

if you want can give you breakdown of parts on my invoice which i still have?

Ade

The problem can be in a deformed phonic wheel, sensor malfunction (mechanic broke the sensor while switching the CV joints.
Can also be, but not sure, that the mechanic switched the phonic wheels, or wrong CV joints. But if you only did one side, my bet would be on a wrong CV joint or too big gap between the sensor.
The incoherent means that the left/ right measurement have more that 25% difference in measurement so they trigger the fault light.

Conrad send me an email, so I can show you better.

Go back and get your mechanic to fit the correct CV joints.

'Look the same' and 'are the same' are quite often very different.

Thank you all for your help and suggestion. The problem has been identified. Suprise, suprise, Driveshaft UK provided the wrong driveshafts despite having the originals as a pattern.

They are going to correct this error and the mechanic will fit them but the wrong drive shafts have broken the ASB sensors. Where best to get two new ones from?

Thanks

Conrad

exactly what i said mate :) read my post about 3 or 4 replies further up. they are fiat parts only.

glad you sorted it!

Ade
