Joy. A day off work.

Sadly its not a sickie and I'd rather be in due to the amount of kitchens that I need to plan.

That said I can't make it down the stairs, let alone drive to work!

Was out surveying for Canterbury Council yesterday when my back started to seize after about the 11th kitchen. Managed the last one, got out the property and it decided to seize whilst I was crossing the road. Not a good moment.

Managed to get across to the other side of the road and my colleague (clerk of works) managed to get his car and bring it over. Oh how embarrassing!

Got in the car and felt fine(ish). When we pulled up behind my motor it became apparent I couldn't even lift my leg to get out the Zafira! The time between the Zafira and my Stilo seems to be blurred but somehow I got in it.

Gingerly I drove home and if I'm honest it probably wasn't the best idea but I just didn't want to be stranded or leave my car somewhere (yes I know its only a Stilo, but doesn't hurt to practice loving car for your motor regardless of what it is!).

Pulled up on the drive and managed to roll out the car onto the floor, crawled on my hands and knees to the front door and then onto the lounge floor. Got into bed from there later on!

This morning things appear to be better but jesus I'm bored already (as you can tell from this post). Still crawling around the place but at least the pain isn't as severe. On the mend I guess with the help of some co-proxamol (pain killers) and dicloflex (anti inflammatories).

I guess being 6'6" tall, back problems are unavoidable. Annoying nevertheless especially as I can't recall what would have set my back off this time. Last time was way back in March 2008 when I was shifting furniture - now that is obvious what caused it but this time round, not a clue.

Anyone else here suffer with back issues?

I know where ur coming from.............

I too have major back problems so i know totally where your coming from.

I was a Rugby addict in my youth(33 now!) & played Hooker. I first got back pain 1996 when i was 20. It used to take be about 20mins to get my arse out of bed in the mornings as I used to wake up with blue legs from the top of the knee down where the circulation was practically cut off whilest i slept...!

I continued to play rugby for another 3 years until my back went so severly i ended up in hospital for 2 days being pushed, pulled, prodded, poked, X-rayed & MRI'd..! I was told if i was tackled too hard or landed in the wrong position i'd end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life..>!

Wow, what a choice eh?? - Walk or Roll???

Well... walking won..! I gave up Rugby there & then....>! Ended up i'd prolapsed 3 discs in the lower lumber region of my back. L3 L4 & L5 & the pressure had squashed my spinal cord & prevented me from moving...! 2 days later i was on the operating theatre table being opened up.

They performed the Pinning & Dicescectomy on the 06-06-00. The relief after i had the op was elating & the morphine.............. OMFG...! That alone was worth all the pain..! Haha...! I had a small machine that used to buzz every 10 mins. When it did i clicked a button in my hand & ....BANG...
a shot of morphine......Mmmmmmmm.... 10 mins later ....... Buzz ....BANG.......Mmm.... etc etc U get the picture........

It took me several months to get back to normal again but things have generally been great nowadays, i do pull it occasionaly, the pain is unbearable, but alot less than 9 years ago...!

I truely feel for you matey & know 1st hand how much backs can be so painfull & depressing.

Any way, keep ur chin up & i hope it sorts itself soon..! Really soon..! LOL

Nice1!

You think you've got problems!

My back goes into spasm if I stand or walk for too long. I have to force myself into the car. The worst incident was in a book shop about 5 years ago. Spent the next 2 days in bed, another on the sofa. Off work for 4 days in total.
I have a displaced sacro-iliac joint, the bit where the spine joins the pelvis.
Then there's my hips. The 6th replacement is imminant.
Cervical spondilosis.
Dodgy Knee.
Dodgy shoulder.

You do, however, have my sympathy.

On the mend (fortunately) thank you for asking.

Tried to get to work on Friday but found I couldn't make it so turned round and headed back to a comfy bed.

Been up and about since. I'm now at a point where I don't need any pain killers and can tolerate the constant reminder. (I'm not one to take something unless I really need it).

Taking things slowly but will head back to work on Monday. There's a big incentive in that the Stilo is being remapped by Angel Tuning so even if I need a zimmer frame, I'll be there!

Spoke to the doctor on Friday and he has given me some exercises to strengthen my back muscles. As I have essentially a desk job which has its levels of stress, my back rarely gets put into heavy use and spends its time tense - so its not rocket science when it fails me when I push it too far or get over-stressed.

This is something I can't ignore as its most likely to occur again and could lead to nastier long term conditions. So I'm thinking prevention is better than cure. Will have to re-assess a few things I think!
