tyre width vs. wheel width?

Hey chaps and chapettes! i have moved onto my second fiat now a good old bravo hlx from a marea 1.8 elx and have a question about tyre sizes. currently running 185/55/15 on the standard 6" wide wheels and i was thinking of changing to 195/50/15! the circumference seems ok but i'd like to know if anybody has done this before and experienced any negative side effects! any answers or sugestions appriciated!! cheers wb jase

No probs whatsoever with those sizes. Infact alot use that tyre size as they are cheaper than the 185's.

Yes, you've got quite a wide choice of tyre widths suitable for 6" wide rims, anything in the 175-215 range is OK.

As said 195/50 is a very common fitment to aftermarket alloys so the choice of those is huge and the prices often lower.

I run sporty-spec. tyres this size on my 20v Marea in the summer months and change to 185/65 comfort/wet-grip bias tyres in winter - the slight change in overall gearing between the two sizes is a small bonus

Thanks for the response guys!! should be getting some uniroyal rainsport 2's in the 195/50/15 size soon then! btw, i recommend everybody trys these tyres out at some point! they are quite unbelieveable in the wet and still rather epic in the dry having had them on my previous car for a while.
