The Rat may have MOT but its problem/s are not over :( The gear box is now crunching badly when I try to select reverse, this happens every time, it will go into reverse but you have to give it a hard pull and go through the crunch. :( (sounds like im trying to put into gear with the clutch up.) It's also notchy going into first gear. If the engine is not running then I can select all gears with ease. I have filled the gearbox oil up, had to put approx 700ml in so it was low.

Have checked by the battery tray to see if I had clutch fluid leaking but none, all fluid levels are okay. The clutch is fine pulls through all gears with no problems and no sign of it slipping, the bite has not changed.

I could now do with some suggestion on what to check next because I cant for the love of me think what is wrong?? Come On BOO help

Thanks

Oh the car is a 2.0 marea if you don't know.

Re: Crunching Gears (Reverse)

hows your clutch pedal feel these days?

Next time you have a clear road, get it rolling, say, 15mph, pop it into 3rd or 4th and floor it. If the revs build quickly, and your speed doesn't then you've got a worn out clutch i'd say. Either that or a gearbox recon, but thats not what you wanna hear, lol

Re: Crunching Gears (Reverse)

The clutch is dragging, not slipping. If it was slipping you'd have no trouble selecting gears.

Check under the dust cover of the slave cyl.

Re: Crunching Gears (Reverse)

round about where is the slave cylinder located? a pic would be helpful, not to sound dumb but what am i looking for when i lift the dust cover?

Re: Crunching Gears (Reverse)

Ontop of the gearbox, and you're looking for leaking fluid. It leaks into the dustcover before it leaks out.

Re: Crunching Gears (Reverse)

Thanks Tom ill take a look tomorrow, if its leaking will i need to change it? will this be the source of my problems?

right thanks to svens guide i now have a clear view of the slave cylinder, pic attached.

The dust cover is ripped and it has oil around the bottom of it, as you can see from the pic it has a bit of oil on top of the box. Could this be from the salve cyl? my brake fluid is okay?

all help welcome.

Tom would you advise changing it? also if i were to change it would you go brand new or s/h (scrappy)

forgot pic :)

looks from the pic that the fluid is being lost from the cylinder. As Tom says, put a new one on

on the advice of my mechanic i bleed the cylinder, this actually worked!! i went on a test drive and it was like driving a new car was very smooth through all the gears and would go into and out of reverse no problem, needless to say it just crunched when i was reversing onto my drive, however this has answered my question and i have just ordered a NEW Cylinder from Fiat, thanks to svens guide i will be changing it tomorrow :)

When your mechanic suggesed bleeding, not replacing, i take it he hadn't seen the car, or he pictures?

Slightly OTT,

But I'm amazed at how rusty all your cars are under the bonnet. I know that you have to put up with salting on the roads in the UK, but doesn't that affect the durability of your engines and components, suspension etc.?

I would know, my Bravo is an ex-UK import and I had to change ABS sensors etc. because they had rusted to bits.

i think every 10 year old car is going to have rust on its parts! dont matter to much as its only surface, at least the body is good :)
