Good morning all. I received an e-mail yesterday from a group attemptint to organise a drive for charity covering the John O Groats to Lands End.
Here's the e-mail:
Hi,
I'm hoping you can help me. My name is Vanda and I'm not here to tell you I have 47 million dollars in a foreign bank account I need your help with moving, or even try to sell you any body enhancing products!
I am a fellow member of a car club organising a trip from John O Groats to Lands End in August 2009. We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for the Terrence Higgins Trust and a major (yet to confirm) cancer charity, by bringing as many car cubs together as possible to do the run in under 24 hours. Piqued your interest?? Please read on…..
The idea we have created, we have named ‘CCs For Charity' (Car Clubs For Charity)
Our web site is up and running, but still undergoing changes:
www.ccs4charity.com – is online from there have a look in the forum, you will need to register to post on the board.
We fully intend to get as much coverage on this as possible, depending on the level of interest from the internet forums, we shall contact all car magazines, try to obtain corporate sponsorship from appropriate companies, and also ensure all car clubs who attend and names of people taking part are listed for publicity purposes, unless of course you wish to remain anonymous. You would also be able to collect personal sponsors in the form of your family and friends.
There will be a planned route, organised rest points, and more importantly we'd do it sensibly (sticking to the speed limit and taking regular breaks) THIS IS NOT A RACE - we'd be working in conjunction with the local police taking advice on risk assessment and gaining permission, it's not about who gets there first, it's about raising money and making sure we all arrive alive, the charities will not accept anyone who makes their name look bad and neither will we.
Close to Lands End we would have a final meeting point and endeavour to convoy in to Lands End all together, the main organisers car at the front.
Where from here?
Well, if your club is interested, ask if anyone will take responsibility for organising your club. We will do the overall organising but it will be easier if we are talking to one person from your club rather than everyone. Create a list of names who are interested and contact us through the web site. Your organiser would then be responsible for keeping you up to date with information from us. Each club will also have their own forum space on our web site.
If no one else but you in your club is interested, there is nothing to stop you contacting us yourselves and going it alone.
Why so far in advance?
Quite simply we need to be able to organise everything, we need to try and gain sponsorship, both personal and corporate, and also to make sure we can afford the fuel and hotel accommodation for the journey - I need not tell you this will cost a lot on fuel. To prepare well, we need time, if we're going to make this work we need people on board and in for the long run.
Thanks for reading this, I know it's lengthy but we really appreciate you taking time to consider it. If you're happy with our suggestion then please post this information on our behalf on your web site. Simply by contacting you we have already added your name to our list of contacted clubs on our site. Please help us out to raise as much money as we can for 2 good causes.
Many thanks,
Vanda

Fair enough :)

No probs Rob - just hang back a further mile from us lot :) lmao

If its for charity ,you would provide your own fuel! otherwise expenses would get out of hand .

@Wim-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, does this mean i`ll have to follow from a distance then?

" ...Nice bloke, does alot of work for charidee - dosn't like to talk about it" :)

- Yeah, could be up for that, but I have the same fuel issue as Jayfish on this - only in my case it would be running a 20v from Sussex, rather than Kent.

For the majority of us it will be like doing the whole trip twice as you need to get to John O Groats and get back from Lands End.
No matter where you are from the mileage is going to be silly - more so if you are on the East coast than anywhere else.

In my opnion, this is a stupid idea for charity.

Here we are with the oil supplies running low, yet, anyone that partakes in this event will be doing at least 1500 miles. Go figure.

No I don't work for Greenpeace. :)

Hi,

Vanda here from www.ccs4charity.com we now have both charities on board and they are delighted for us to be supporting them.

Regards fuel, yes, you would indeed have to supply your own - Sorry! I will however be approaching the main petrol companies for some form of sponsorship, be it for the cars or a big shot straight to our 2 charities.

The reason it's August 2009 is because it is such a lot of money for fuel so we'll have time to save up!

As for the environmental issues, well, putting things into context, on holiday in Scotland last year I managed to knock 1500 miles up.... which is almost what I'll be doing on the JOG to LE run. Only last year I didn't raise a penny for charity........ next year, you can bet I'll be bringing the money in :)

Thanks for your interest those of you who are intending to join us! Make sure you keep Wimmy informed and he can keep us updated on the site!

in 2009 the petrol will be to expensive for anyone to drive making the whole plan completly flawed!
