Just been looking through old receipts for my Brava and noticed the diagnostic report when I had my water temp sensor replaced.

Errors detected by the control unit

> Water Temperature Sensor - Present
> Injection Advance Check - Intermittent
> Air Flow Meter - Intermittent

Now the temp sensor was obviously replaced but none of the other issues were dealt with.

The garage didn't seem to be bothered to offer any solutions (as they dealt with just the sensor). Any ideas what they might be?

Just thinking perhaps this error log might be a hint?

TIA!

ignition advance is self regulating on a diesel!! as in the harder you drive it the hotter to the glow plugs get from combustion meaning the earlier the ignition!

diesels dont have a spark(igntion) its the compression in the chamber that makes the bang and compression isnt regulated! :)

I thought glow plugs were only used on start up tho? Interesting thing is, before they were replaced, Fiat said the wiring to the plugs may need changing with the plugs. Now that the plugs have been changed my coil light on the dashboard sometimes doesn't light up and other times it takes a while to appear!

Every once in a while I might get an influx of power and then it will return to normal within a couple of seconds. Sort of a surge as it were.

Oh and it still smokes.

I'm just wondering if anything here is connected :)

Would anything be gained from changing the air flow meter?

the coils heat up to start the car but once it is running the heat of the combustion keeps them glowing. obviously the harder you drive the hotter the combustion is meaning the coil gets hotter advancing the timing of the ignition. the fault code may have something to do with the valve timing/sensor but its strange none the less

simple way to test the maf is to diconnect it and see if it runs better or worse.

If they cleared the codes, take it back and get it read again. If the same ones re-appear, there could be a problem. Whats all that about glow plugs and timing ??. TD100 timing is controlled by the injection pump advance solenoid and ECU. a common problem with the solenoid is intermittent smoking and loss of power. so worth getting checked out if these symptoms are present..
