Ticking/Clicking Noise From Engine

Hi guys,

Was driving home from work tonight, but had the radio on so couldn't hear anything, when I pulled on the drive and turned the stereo off, I noticed a clicking/ticking sort of noise coming from underneath the bonnet. I turned it off and restarted, but it was still making the noise.
The clicking/ticking noise gets faster and louder the more revs the car gets. It seems to be coming from the driver's side of the engine.

I know you guys know your Fiats, so I assumed it was best to ask here before taking it to the garage.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,
Matt

I should probably add;
Car was serviced 3k miles ago, but only just put new plugs on a few days back. Cambelt etc was done 26k miles ago.

possibly worn tappets

...or someones put a plastic fork inbetween the cam sprockets to make it have a cool noise.

My little bro used to do it with his bicycle...

how much are tappets to get replaced. cos i think mine are starting to ware.

mine is ticking quite alot aswell recently

is it a serious problem??

also to change them you'd have to take your cams off wouldn't you???.. which means taking cam belt and most of the top of you engine off if i'm thinking about the right things...

i've had them out recently but didn't notice any wear on them but i'm guessing you wouldn't even if ther was...

If the engine is quite old then worn tappets are to be expected. But its nothing to be worried about.

Old engines make noises.

Just seems a bit worrying as the more revs I give it, the more noise it makes. I'll take it to the garage just for piece of mind though.

is it a 1.4?

Check your oil :)

Most noises like this are cured after checking the oil level. Get it topped to the max and I reckon your noises will disappear

Oil is just below max.

Had another look with my brother, he says it's definately coming from one of the belts or cogs. He said to leave it running to see if we smelt a smokey smell and there was. There was no smoke, but it smelt like I had just done a burnout. Really tarry/rubbery smell.

I would check the belts and cambelt as well. check to see if the tensioner is ok

i had a ticking noise and hoped that it would just be the tappets...........
turned out it was my camsand needed them replace, best thing to do is ask a garage....

I am dreading it being something major. Got her booked in for Tuesday to a garage I go to for all my problems. :)

Something simular happened to my 1.2 last year.
Making the sound your describing. it was 2 bent valves.
Head had to be stripped and rebuilt!
Bring it to a reputal garrage cause i went to a cheap guy and he never skimmed the head!
Gasket blew after 2000 miles.

It's strange, as my mate pointed out, it wasn't making any ticking noises when I was letting her warm up, I bet it started when I had to slam on my brakes for a dickhead that pulled out on me.

I haven't driven it since, been driving a bloody 1.0l Saxo (Kill me, please!). lol

Hopefully the garage will sort it on Tuesday and it will be cheap, please please please please please please please.

It may be nothing. just tappets.
Mine did it and one of the rockers on the cam shaft had broken in half.
needed a whole new camshaft
