I have been told oil and filter change on my Fiat Bravo 1.4 SX would be about £50 at one garage?

Your looking at £20 (at trade prices) for parts for a basic oil change So not so scandalous after all?
That said, places like National and Kwik-fit often have offers on at around the £25-30 mark for basic oil changes. Worth looking at if you really cant stretch to a full service and all the additional checks.
