I have a Fiat Bravo Trofeo 1.6 X reg (2000)

When I depress the clutch there's a strange noise coming from underneath the car, almost like a continuous grating sound, it stops when I release the clutch.

Can anybody offer me any advice on this.

Is it kinda a wine... if so my marea dose this as well. im pretty positive it is the thrust bearing. not that i know allot about what goes on under the bonnet but i dont think it will course you any more problems then wear the fins on the clutch a little quicker, and seeing as you have to remove the gear box to change either you might as well w till the clutch wears abit more. My punto had this problem its hole life and I learnt to drive in it, it lasted me a further 2 years before clutch went then I just replaced both parts.

Thanks for that kester, yes it is a whiring sound, somebody else told me it was the thrust bearing too.
