How do I access the heater fan switch on the dash (Mk1 HGT) my wife's car heater works fine but the fan doesn't blow. Fuses are fine & connection to heater fan motor is OK, I'm about to check the voltage there & the resistor pack, but how do you get access to the rotary switch?

You mean the in car went svitch ?
If so, take out the HU, there are 4 screws under it, then prise off the small plastic caps that are lef and right of the svitches line on the central dash (svitches for fogs...), there are 2 screws on both sides, then pull out the fan speed buton switch, there is one more screw under it and there are 2 more just above the ashtray.

But if the fan works at position 4/or max def, its the reostat that is broken - its right of the fan motor held by 2 screws

im guessing you mean the 3 rotary switches the middle one just pulls out giving access to a screw which is needed along with a few other screws about 8 more i think and the 2 larger switches are in place behind the console and can only be accessed by removing the centre console :) hope that helps

Yes the middle rotary one is the one I'm after. Heater fan (plain heater: no aircon) doesn't work at any setting & I only get around 6volts at the fan motor. Is there perhaps a relay in this circuit somewhere? The fuse is fine & cigar lighter works OK which is on the same fuse. I'm thinking perhaps too much resistance in a relay, since the resistor pack on the fan motor seems to be OK

sorry not the best on electrics im afraid ive got a haynes if that helps you :)

There is one relay under the cover right of the steering wheel, but I cant get which one is it according to the wiering diagram. But it does go from the mentioned relay, to the rotary fan switch, and from the switch to the reostat, then to the motor.

Did you try connecting the motor direct to the battery ?
And the 6V should make the motor spinn,
speed -
1 =6V
2 =8V
3 =10V
4 =12V

the reostat drops the voltage so the motor wont spinn so fast.

Yes the heater fan turns fine when 12v is applied on the bench - I'll take it off again & try with the various voltages. Also I'll try to locate the relay & substitute a good one.
I didn't get a chance to look at it today - it was slashing down & my son is removing the engine (1300SPI) from a Mini in the garage
