Disgusting....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/5154248.stm

It would appear the votes were counted at half time, therefore the vicious head butt had not happened.

I'm sorry but, as much as I respect Zidane's talent and achievement, he commited an act of gross misconduct (and criminal assault), shamed himself and his country and tarnished an otherwise unblemished career. Him getting this award is tantamount to FIFA saying it's OK to head butt opponents so long as you are a great player.

So much for their Fair Play initiative.

As much as i like zidane i agree that shouldn't have been awarded.

Of course he should have.

Even though he did do it, he was still the best player in the World Cup, probably by a country mile!

Just my opinion though.

Chris

I'm sorry, but I really don't think Zidane was the best player, headbutt or not. Riquelme of Argentina was much better as were a few of the Germans. Cannavaro was more consistent as was Pirlo.

Everyone seems to be seeing Zidane's performance through rose tinted glasses. He's a distinguished player who is retiring and "wouldn't it be so nice if he won the World Cup in his last game". Well, all he won was shame and derision. He even bottled out on the headbutt. A "real" man would've butted Matarazzo in the face, mashing his nose up ;)

His actions are inexcusable, FIFA have set a bad example in awarding him this accolade and he should disappear in shame. He has no defence.

He should not have got it. No matter how good he played, what he did out weighed it. He really should of known better.

What would you know, you're a girl !!! LOL ;)

(sits back and waits for response stating that she won the Fantasy Footie.....again !!)

Is it his fault he's getting the award? No.

At the end of the day, don't disrespect his mum/family and he won't nut you. Just because he is a sportsman doesn't mean he hasn't got a temper and more to the point isn't allowed to unleash it.

I happened to think the head-butt the the chest was quite creative in fact, either way he got his point across!

There's no doubt he'll go down as one of the greats, just like Cantona did... "Kung-fu kick" or not...

Ben.

It dosent matter what the bloke said to him, he's a grown man, not a child. He should be able to control his temper as a proffesional sports man. I think the same about Rooney, which is why they were not in my fantasy football team which, by the way, I won :)

Jackie

Ben, the very fact he is a sportsman means he is most definitely not allowed to unleash his temper in such a violent manner.

Psyching out opponents and putting them off verbally is a part of the game (any game) and has been so for centuries. The wise players take it and use it to fuel their performance and shove the words back down the opponents throats with superior skill and ability and beating them fair and square. By rising above it, they win the battle. What Matarazzo said is of little consequence. He may have questioned his parentage, told him that Zidane's wife took it up the wrong 'un in bed last night, or called him a baldy, ancient frog, but whatever he said, Zidane should have walked away and got on with the job of trying to beat Italy at football.

William Gallas is quoted in the press today, saying that Matarazzo goaded Zidane into his actions (no sh*t, sherlock) and that Matarazzo's silence after the game was an admission of guilt !! I think that if Zidane felt so aggrieved, why is he keeping silent ?? Because he knows he has committed a terrible act of which he should be rightfully ashamed. If he's the dignified man that many claim him to be, he'll hand the Golden Ball to Canavarro.

I think not only should he NOT be awarded the prize, he should be fined, heavily, and also made to apologise to the world, live on TV.

It is no wonder kids these days think it is acceptable to beat each other up, its ****ing discgraceful much like my language..

Damn football, damnit to hell!

...or just play a real mans sport where violence is part and parcel of the game...Like Ice Hockey ;)
Someone badmouthed me, I practically broke his colarbone...and he at the age of 32 and me at the age of 16. How stupid must he of felt ;)

Have to admit...he went down like a sack of sh*t tho, much like most footballers. Which is half the reason I don't nessesarily watch it as I'm sick of the diving and then getting up 30 seconds later anfter that "magic sponge" has done its trick.

he deserved it, last ever game, amazing player, lost his cool in the last minute, i blame the italian for saying whatever he did, zidane is only human after all.

******. Every player knows how to psyche another player out with words, it happens all the time. Get close enough to the pitch at any football game and you can sometimes hear the players questioning each others parentage. At the end of the game, they all have a drink in the bar and it's never even mentioned. It's been part of the game for decades, if not longer.

Zidane has probably done the very same himself on hundreds of occasions.

What he did was inexcusable and you cannot lay any blame whatsoever at the feet of Materazzi. Zidane was an idiot, plain and simple. He and he alone is to blame.

The saddest thing is that all we seem to be talking about now is that French **** and not the victory of the Italian team which is far more important.

Boy I wish I was at the Circus Maximus tonight....

Imagine if you could do that in other sports...

Can you imagine Button head-butting Schumacher because he cut him up?

Or

Jimmy White smashing a snooker cue over Ronnie O'Sullivan's head because he lost?

In the end of the day they all get paid silly amounts of money to run around a field. The whole world is watching them (with an audience age ranging from 5 to 99) and expecting them to do their country proud. So what happens? Bit of goading occurs and a player has to lose the plot. Nice example to impressionable onlookers. Not.

Regardless of what was said, there is no excuse for violence. In my eyes, doesn't matter how good he's been in his profession - he's made a pratt of himself and deserves no respect at all (let alone any award) for losing the plot centre stage in front of the world.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me - a saying many forget.

Really cant understand you Rob ???? Can you imagine yourself in his position ????? Firstly that was world cup final, alot of tension and only god knows what Materazzi told him (apperently that he is a terrorist from alzir)....

but anyway, I am glad Henry was playing brilliant last night :):):)

Cat, you, I and the rest of the world will never know what was said, and we never will, even if Zidane tells us, it's his word against Materazzi.

Sure, I've been called many things in my time, many of which I have wanted to batter someone for (one or two I did), but on the field of play you CANNOT react with violence. It is unsportsmanlike and illegal. Simple as that.

As I said before, it happens all the time and most players are professional enough to rise above it and channel any anger caused into positive energy.

As for Henry ? He played pants compared to what he does for Arsenal week in, week out. He was a shadow of his normal self.

The French were very unimpressive all tournament. Their best win was against Spain, but hardly difficult. Their group games were poor. Their victory against Brazil was a token win against a poor Brazilian side, and their last two games, they could only score from dubious penalties. Not a single goal from open play. Very poor and very fortunate to be in the final.

The best team won.

btw, when youÿre mentionig dubious penalties ???? what about that penalty for italy against australia in 94 minute ???? It was obvious that there was no penalty at all
