Broken neck, death, servere facial lacerations.

Will that do for starters?

From a paramedic point of view, I cant think of any benefits of not having an airbag.
There are minor ones including maintaining them but any small points against them are minimal against the reasons for having them, thats why all new cars (as far as I'm aware) have at least one as standard.

I have discussed this with some colleagues and none of us could come up with a valid reason to disconnect or remove an airbag. If you've done this and not told your insurance company you have effectively made a modification without telling them.

Sorry if it's not what you wanted to know but it's how it is I'm afraid.

All airbags should be removed and replaced with a metal spike. I'm sure people would drive that little more carefully then :D

No advantages.

If your lucky enough to hit a car hard enough and square enough for the airbag to go off, then you want an airbag there.

If your worried about facial disfigurement caused by an airbag going off in your face, I don't think it will do quite as much damage as you face planting into your steering wheel. Plus it has the added advantage of partially shielding racoons, dirty reeboks and other unpleasantries from hitting u in the face.

lol...yeah those dirty reeboks are a killer...lol

Having had an airbag go off in my face, I have to say that I'm glad it did.

Fractured nose was the outcome but then if I had hit the steering wheel, I'm sure it would have been worse.

The benefits as i would see would only come about if involved in a small impact - just big enough to set the airbag off...

1) no burns from the detonation in an impact not big enough that you would have hit your head.
2) in cars as old as ours the bag going off would mean a write-off as it would add around 800 quid to the repair bill.

Not saying they are good benefits, and in no way do they come close to the benefits of having one, as it would be probably one in every 5000 or so accidents which fit the criteria, but they are potential benefits.

If you're so small that you have to sit closer than 12 inches from the steering wheel then an air bag will knock you senseless or break your neck

If you are medically exempt from wearing a seat belt then you'll never want the air bag to go off.

The first item of safety restraint is your seat belt- a point not often fully appreciated- without that keeping you in place the air bag deployment is liable to do you more harm. The auir bag has got to deploy and be already deflating before you hit it. That's why SMART airbag systems compute not to deploy the air bag if seat belt is not fastened

And of course, most cars have the ability to turn off the front passenger air bag if you have to have a rear facing child seat in the front seat

just a little worry... wot happens if u wear glasses... im sure having ur glasses smached into ur face isn't good... the broken sharp lenses might go straigh through ur eyes.... owwwww

but even so.. might be better than smashed brains everywhere!!!

Tommy K - Have you got the Bottle!!

well in my last car i tried getting out of the way of the airbag

a drunk driver (found this out after the police arrested him of course) ploughed into the front of my car toaling about a 70MPH impact, the air bag didnt go off in the end

i was streachered off but my injuries were whiplash and a headache

the point is i saw the fcuker comin, so i braced for impact as it were, in that case no airbag is good.... however if it was not ssen and the airbag did go off then that would be so much better then a dash modiication in the shape of my head and the colour of bloody brains

Rant over .. point is Airbag good!!! :)

@ Tommy K - Most glasses now have plastic lenses so they are very unlikely to break in the manner you describe chap. However, the frame is very likely to cut your face.

Being a fellow spectacle wearer i fear that one also, the bendy spectacle frames being the answer to that one.

an advantage could be that without one the accident would more likely kill you than leave you in a vegetant state?

Now THAT's thinking outside the box cynic. ;)
