Sometimes when I slightly touch my accelerator I get a backfire and/or a clunk sound from the back!

I recently added a cat back s/s exhaust to my s/s backbox but it was making this noise before i had the cat back system!

Anyone know what it could be?

It's going in on monday for a diagnostic at my local garage, would this detect the problem?

What engine?

1.8 hlx R reg 1997

How old are the plugs ? and fule filter ?

Serviced less than a month ago with sparks, oil, oil filter and fuel filter!

anyone have an idea what's up with my bravo??

Is the exhaust leaking anywhere?

Is it a big bang or just a little pop?

It's not massively loud but it's louder than an average pop you hear from some aftermarket exhausts.

It mostly happens when I'm in gear and the revs are just below 2k and i slightly put my foot on the accelerator and it backfires/clunks.

Doesn't do it when I just rev it at standstill!

How can I check if there is a leak in the exhaust system then?

Torch, eyes, careful use of your hand. Basically look around all the joints and hold your hand near them, if its leaking you should feel it.

The other option is get a length of hose, stick one end in your lug'ole and hold the other near all the joints, you will hear any leaks loud and clear.

put newspaper under car see if n e this dripping,

it will also more than likely be black in the area its leaking from.

mite just be dirty water, if it on sum paper u can take indoors nd ave a look at it.

the drips, just sayin, thought oil waz drippin out my sump b 4, just dirty water it waz that black

the black from an exhaust leak will be carbon and is fairly easy to recognise.

my hlx does same thing mate, did it on standard exhaust around 2000rpm ,then i had cat back system fitted and still does it love it though, sounds rather cool when you boot it a little and then change gear no leaks on my system, new plugs, new filters so dont know. i have used it like this for nearly a year...wouldnt worry bout it

Yup, i gt my HLX already fitted wi a supersprint from cat back, and it does exactly the same thing. Dont think its a problem, but its due for its 72K service so if anything is noticed il let u know!

I'll let you know what my mechanic has to say about it on monday! I sure hope there's a simple fix for it because it's so embarassing driving past pedestrians when it happens! Really annoys me!

Well the mechanic was totally baffled!

He said he didn't want to waste my money trying to find out what's wrong coz he really really had no idea!

Only thing he said that it can't be good for the exhaust to be doing it and then suggested i tried reverting to standard air filter instead of my induction kit!

So I'm on the lookout for standard air filter(top part,didn't remove bottom part) and I will need the air intake pipework and plastic air intake thing that's at the front if anyone has one they don't want!
