No 1 TDC - How do you tell???????

Hi all,

Thanks to all for help in past with my cambelt saga.
Now replaced head using Sealey cam locking tools with No.1 piston at TDC as instructed & fitted cambelt. BUT how do I know if its on ignition stroke or not when I set TDC on No. 1 with the head off? Where does the timing come from the crankshaft or cams as I could have TDC on No. 1 but NOT on ignition stroke if timing comes from crankshaft. If timing comes from Camshaft then surely it doesnt matter as long as No.1 is TDC when fitting cam belt.

To check it, now with the head and cambelt on, how do I tell when No. 1 is TDC on IGNITION stroke.

ALSO to be sure when sitting in the drivers seat is No. 1 cylinder on the right or left of the engine ie on timing belt end or flywheel end?

Many thanks

TDC on ignition is determined by the crank AND cam. The crank has 2 TDCs per cycle, cam has 1.

a stroke of the piston is a stroke(nothing more nothing less it is either up or down!) its the cams that decide if it is an ignition or exhaust stroke.

cilinder 1 from the drivers side is on the right

so set piston 1 to tdc on the crank set the cams to tdc with the tools lock the crank (by the flywheel) put it all back together put the cam belt on set the tensioner check everything is done right remove all tools

now take the locking tools off

put a socket on the crank and turn it with a rachet through a couple of cycles to make sure nothing is catching

if it all rotates without geting stuck

start the buggar and volla

Im Driven to Earn, and I Earn to Drive......

hi,

I tried to turn it over on battery but its nearly flat so have to wait till tomorrow!!!
