Im looking to buy a 98/99 HGT. I have seen a few advertised locally (Midlands) but feel free to email me if you are selling your car (if moderators will allow).

Can I ask what the mpg is for this car? my current car a mazda 323 zxi is getting 15-20 - no matter how slow it drives it still burns fuel like its going out of fashion.

I am also told that the 2.0 20v engine requires an engine out cambelt change at 60,000 miles costing £800+ - is this true?

Can anyone tell me anything else (good or bad) about this car?

yep cambelts a job,
powerfiat do it very well and at a very fair price too,
mpg will be improved

I get between 30 - 33mpg with various driving. Cambelt is no longer an engine out job as long as you go to the right places. can get it done for as little as £300 now. However, any HGT you buy at that age should have had it done recently.

Go for a '99 as well cause it will be the MK2 for very little extra money.

thanks for the advice - Im looking to spend less than £2000 which should get me a sub 80,000 miler.

Think Id prefer an older leather model but Ill keep an eye on whats around.

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

lightwarrior has a cracking bravo for sale with full leather, its a 1.8HLX instead of the HGT but tis still quick and gets better fuel

just to bring up this old thread, Im still looking.

should the belts be done at 6 years or 70,000 miles?

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

They are great cars and the only issue is the close ratio box meaning a short fifth and hence 4000 revs at 85mph. Gives about 15 mph on long journeys if you hammer it. Ohter than that ok on fuel.

Aha - a ZXi owner?

I used to have the SE model of the 323ZXi. I think that you'll be disappointed in an HGT's performance in comparisson, but I agree, the V6 is a greedy pig.

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

Ive seen some belts break around 60K on the 20v's depends how the car was driven. Ive also seen one break at 54k miles. So my advice to u is to change it if u buy a car with no record of a cambelt change.

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

Now your worrying me. Bought my HGT last wednesday and im pretty sure it hasnt seen a cambelt change within its lifetime, theres no record of it anyway and the last service stamp on the book was at 69,000 miles (before the recomended belt change at 72,000miles) Now its done 84,000, been ringing around to get cambelt change quotes, £380 has been my best so far. Sounds asif im best getting it done as soon as possible. Dunno what to think when it comes to my Fiat dealers quote in Southend. Sent them a email asking for a price but had no response. Rang them up and they quoted me £870 which i wasnt to happy with obviously, then did eventually get a email response back quoting me £380 all in. I think my best bet is gointg down there in person with my car :S

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

@ chris - if your near southend go to powerfiat.co.uk,(or .com) £395 all in, they did mine a month or two back

Whuy would you need a rocker cover gasket?

Lee

Re: re: buying a hgt 20v

Not bad but it only mentions 1 tensioner. What about the idler? You should also get the water pump done and the aux belts.
