ok looking at alarms for my new car, what kind of savings have people had insurance wise with apporved alarms instead of non-approved alarms?

in theory an alarm which is not approved will save you nothing as the insurance company tend to take the opinion that it won't work unless it's approved. With an alarm you might get 2%?

The problem i have with alarms is 1. they don't go off until your window is broken and 2. nobody actually cares when one is going off.

I sat in my bedroom watching 2 lads take the stereo from a car with the alarm going off on a main street in sheffield on a sunday afternoon. Nobody stopped, they saw me watching and just put their hoods up.

However in my experience the people that have broken into my car have run off when the alarm went off, so it's only cost me a window.

Quite good actually as i rang the sheffield call center and said "i'm watching 2 lads committing a crime"

within about 5 mins about 6 cars turned up! Of course by then they had gone and as far as i know they didn't catch them, but it get me away from uni work for half an hour.

What a load of lies!!!!!!!!

sailing, windsurfing, drinking, and sleeping don't really count as uni studies! lol

"they don't go off until your window is broken" depends which alarm you get, i got the proximity sensor on mine, it'll chirp at you if you're stood too close to it, if it chrips three times in short space of time the alarm will go off also has the shock sensors so if something hits the window it'll go off doesn't have to break the window.
ok i had to spend a bit more for the alarm but it does give a bit more piece of mind

yeah not much because my insurance company said they're more bothered about accidents and crashes thean theft of the car, but i know one of my mates saved nearly £150 on his insurance when he had his fitted. adrian flux insurance i think is who he is with

i saved about £150.00 on my insurance when i told endsleigh the info on my alarm...

it's a top of the range sigma alarm - an M30 - i've always had sigma alarms fitted to my cars - can't beat having a good alarm - ok, if thieves want to break in they will do, but if it saves £150 every year then hey it's worth it after 2/3 years! :) plus the piece of mind it gives you...

i spent 450 on cobra cat 1 and it saved 50 squid a year lol

never had a discount for having an alarm, although I did have one policy when they would only cover me if I had a Thatcham approved immobiliser (got 2).

In my experience tends to be more the case that with modified/prestige/sports model cars insurers may insist on certain security, more than it getting a discount as such.

I know my mum has to have a Tracker fitted to get insured on her car.

cynic-al.. if you have dual zone proximity then your alarm can and will go off without someone breaking into the car. on my hlx the alarm chirps if you stand next to it for more than 3 seconds. it will go off if you stay there or try to jack up the car (alloy wheel theft?) and if you open any doors, windows, the boot, or even the bonnet, the alarm goes off immediately, the fuel pump is cut off, the fiat immobiliser is armed....

what was my point... oh yeah, the car doesn't even have to be touched for the alarm to go off, so a good one does give protection...

the alarm may well go off, but how many people rush over to see whats going on and tackle the thief?

Hey Al, where in Sheffield do you live??

I'm a student at Sheffield Hallam

i was a student at hallam for 4 years studying engineering. I live opposite the cemetery on city road for all 4 years. It's between the park hill flats and manor top.
