Had a long drive last night and the roads where real quiet and still drove at 70mph incase of cameras, felt real slow going that speed espesially when the roads are dead, anyone think that we should have higer or no speed resrictions on motorways?

Gary

AB-SO

BLOODY

LUTELY

But how do you stop the corsa and saxo brigade from doing stupid speeds whilst they balance their big-mac n fries on the dash, with their milkshakes between their legs whilst they turn around to ponce a ciggy off their mate sitting in the back seat, and their right foot is firmly to the floor.

?

Exactly, I agree that in certain weather conditions it should be lowerd maybe, but it drags so much going 70 on long long drives. I think 80 would be much more suitable. Always going to be some people who take it a lot further though.

Gary

If you want a faster top speed they have to do something about MLMs and slow vehicles.

I'd love to see a french style lower speed limit in rain/snow etc.. here.

I think there should be equal penalties for driving too slowly, if the road is clear and you are doing under 50MPH causing everyone to go around you then you should get fined. Tailgating should also be made a finable offence.

One of the reasons it feels so slow is that at 70 on your speedo, you're probably doing an actual 63-65. And the trigger speed for scameras is 10%+2 = 79mph.

I feel as if i am going slow at 100mph...lol (On private roads of course ;)

70mph is far to slow, but ATM its the law, nothing we can do about that...:(

Daz

The 10% + 2 is actually a myth, its not the law. They can legally set the cameras to 71MPH. The Assoc of plods recomends the 10% + 2 as a guideline.

I hate lorries overtaking lorries, the speed diffrence between them is so small that it takes ages foricing people to que to take over them. Just wondering, can they fine you using the info. gatherd from average-speed cameras? Or is it just the big fat yellow ones that can get you? I often go about 80 - 85 on the motorway and don't want to get a fine or points for it, I know if I didn't want a fine I shouldn't go over the speed limit, but in this case is at as serious as a 30 zone?

Gary

From my uncle who is a plod

if the mways quiet/empty, if ur doing say 80/85 most of em will not pull u, if its rush hour and ur doing 80/85 then they will take you to the cleaners, common sense I think

I did 95 back from Formby other night but it was 3.00am and I didnt see another car until I got to manchester yet tonight I did no more than 70mph coz it was rush hour

Is there many actual speed cameras on motorways, say the M1. Or is it just the police to be careful about?

Gary

they removed a lot of the speed cameras on the motorway, well fixed ones because people were seeing them and slamming on and causing pile ups

there are mobile ones about!

Since the rep of Ireland changed to kilometers last week were up to 75 on the motor way but then REp of Ireland only has 6 (i think) speed cameras and at any one time only 2 work.. woo hoo NOt that I condone speeding he he

Lets get ready...to Rant

Last time I got pulled on the motorway (first time in fact) I should really have considered myself lucky. Traffic plods said I had averaged 87.5 over three miles, which was a bloody miracle since I'd been going considerably faster than that on this occasion (ordinarily I rarely exceed 100 even in perfect conditions, inspite of however many audi's overtake me).

They must have had their eye in the sky on me for a hundered mile or so - unluckily, I was only five mile from the turn off on the M1 for Bromi land when they finally caught up with me. Its actually quite rare that I go on the motorway, and on most journeys I'll pass 3 or 4 people pulled up by the plod, as I go steamin past. Guess my luck ran out this occasion.

The cameras I've observed on high, arn't speed cameras, they're for observation. Besides traffic congestion and accidents, they will keep an eye on you if you keep your foot down over prolonged stretches (spesh if your car is bright bloody yellow like mine!). Then they'll get a traffic car after you (as no doubt happened with yours truly!).

Suppose I can't begrudge the plod for pulling me (actually felt thnakful) cos the guys must have waited till my speed dropped for them to clock me doing 87.5. The guy also stressed that the conditions should make me question whenter speeds such as mine wern't dangerous in these conditions (it was wet, and visibility hadn't been brilliant).

Got the impression if I'd been doing a steady 85 they wouldn't have bothered. I still was a bit miffd, cos my cars brakes and tyres can handle the conditions at that speed. I think the speed limits are about right, cos traffic plods are obviously able to exercise discretion, and there are plenty of crappy old cars still knocking about with **** poor brakes and tyres as thin as those on my push iron!!

My attitude to motorway driving is - the sooner I get where I need to be, the safer for everyone. On that very same journey (not unlike every other motorway journey I ever make - almost without exception) some bloody oblivious cow decides she's going to overtake ahead of me, so she pulls out at a snails pace in her new Range-rover obviously without checking her mirrors. It is rare indeed that I will resort to my horn, but if I hadn't on this occasion, she would have put me into the central reservation.

Some people just do not have a f**kin clue when it come to driving. The sooner I can get where I wana be, the less likely they are to invlove me in their accidents!

> cos my cars brakes and tyres can handle the conditions at that speed.

Can they now? ;)

Its more a case of can you and everyone around you handle the conditions, not the cars. If someone doing 60 pulls out into the middle lane infront of you you're sorta furked.

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

I think that a rise of maybe 10mph would be ok. The 70mph limit was passed I believe in 1967. Look at the advances in braking and car safety since then. Wasnt alive back then obviously but didnt most cars have awful cross-ply tyres and obviously no abs.
Ive had my say so I'll got back to sleep!

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

ABS does not reduce braking distances.

Also modern cars are heavier, much heavier.

And the reaction time won't have gotten shorter.

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

He-hee, I knew that would get a rise out of someone (..had to be you Tom!)

People go on about handling, and how fast you can or can't manage to go. I couldn't agree more Tom - it's down to the driver - not the car, but it does help if the driver is acutely aware of the limitations of their vehicle. My girlfriend frets a bit when she's in with me, but I wouldn't dare drive in hers as I do in mine.

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

Most people are not aware of the limits of their car or their driving.

Braking distances are all very good and well but when some bumwit bimmer driver pulls out do they always leave the correct distance between you and them for you to slow down in time? Nope. Do they ever look in the mirror? Nope :)

If they pull out 5 car lenghts infront of you and you are going 40MPH faster than him then you're in trouble.

At 70 your thinking distance is about 21m, about 5-6 car lenghts. In that time he has gone 12m so now you are 9m from him.

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

tis true, I had a metro before my brava, luckily I had some great tuition of a high speed police pursuit driver, he taught me how to use the car but be safe with it, I had a mate who because he had ABS and Traction control thought he was indistructable until he put himself in intensive care, and he thought he was a good driver! There is always a time and a place!

If I wanna mess about with my car I either do it late at night when its quiet, then if I bin it and kill myself its my fault or I go rag it round the local airfield!

Re: Lets get ready...to Rant

Exactly :)

I am a big fan of skid CONTROL courses, teach drivers how to control and survive skids. Most teach them 'never ever get into a skid or oversteer, its bad' and the drivers are just as dangerous.
