Cam belt failure

I have a 1996 Fiat Brava 12v 1.4 - this afternoon I had a cam belt failure (the belt was only fitted 14 months ago). The car is now in my local garage - any idea what sort of price I might be looking at for a repair?!

If the cam belt snapped when you were driving it, well, its game over for that engine! You are now looking at an engine swap. Its not worth rebuilding the 1.4 anyway. You are looking at spending at least half the value of the car to sort that out.

But there is a very very slim chance ur very lucky like 1%!

Thanks for that - my mechanic has phoned to tell me that he doesn't feel it may be terminal - yet! I was driving at about 30mph when it gave way. I'm really pi**ed off because the belt was not old and I had the car regularly serviced.

it happens. i had a close shave about 2 months ago in my 1.4
The tensioner died, and i heard it go and stopped as soon as i could (i was on a dual carriageway)
That would have been the end of that!

Think I was luckiest, had just pulled up at the lights, put the handbrake on cause I was lighting a fag, put it in gear and................nothing!!!!!

The belt actually went as I was in neutreal

how do you realise u have a cambelt failure? I assume the engine is gunna die straight away. Is ther a loud bang? or does the engine just die? Like you said you heard the tensioner go? How do you know what sound that makes?

No sound as such - suddenly the battery and oil lights came on and I lost all drive. Knocked the car out of gear and drifted to a halt at the side of the road. Mechanic has found a couple of bent valves - sending the head off to be checked and maybe skimmed and should give me the full gory details about repair later today.

mine suddenly made a clattering sound, and continued for the mile it took me to get off the dual carriageway. no hard shoulder.

The tentioner went on mine a couple of months back while I was driving it. The engine (as a whole) wasnt dead however I needed to replace every valve (X16) and seat, then gasgets ..... £600

Fiat wanted £2500

Amazing how Fiat quotes are so extravagant. My car is at a local mechanic who has a good reputation so I await his call. My engine is 12v, he told me that if it was an 8v the damage would have been less.

If I had to get a recon engine, I've been Googling and found this firm - http://www.247spares.co.uk/fiat-parts/ - anyone sourced parts for their Fiat from them? Any coments?

Update - the cambelt itself did not snap, but the teeth were stripped off. Seems the problem lay with the tensioner. It sounds even worse in daylight!

y'know i'd question the guys work... listening to it, with a buggered tensioner??? scary stuff...

Woops - figure of speech - he's not listening to the engine - I meant the whole situation sounds worse in daylight - sorry!

Want to bet whoever did the belt last time didn't do the tensioner?

If it was idling the engine would have stopped VERY quickly, when it goes at 70 and the engine is kept turning by the gearbox is when it does the really nasty damage.
