I was just wondering what people have needed to do to their cars since buying them (not modding) in order to keep them on the road?

I have a Brava 1.4sx and since Apr 2003 I have needed -

- a new gearbox
- a new clutch
- a new timing belt
- a new high-level stop-light bulb strip
- 2x indicator bulbs
- 2x front brake discs
- a new speedo sender unit
- new dashboard light bulbs
- 2x new tyres

The car is now going back in again on Monday as the airbag warning light is constantly on. I dont know why, but I fear a big bill?

Is this just normal for Fiat's or have I bought a shite one?

I hate to say it mate but i think you just got a shagged one!

Had two HLX's and other then services i have had to replace the clutch slave cylinder! other then that its been hassle free motoring!

Sorry to here you have had so many troubles :(

You bought a shite one.

Mine has needed brakes, clutch, a couple of headlight bulbs and a dash board bulb.
Oh! and an exhaust.
To be honest i see everything that i have replaced so far as standard stuff to be replaced on a 1996 car, so i'm not really bothered and i tend to go over the top when i replace something anyway, like the brakes i didn't just replace the pads i changed the discs and pipes too and checked everything else so i know i won't have much more problem with the parts i do change or the other parts that are around whatever i have replaced.
So all in all mine is great. (touch wood it stays like that).

Oh! just remembered i also put a new starter in it and some of the ignition system was replaced with new stuff.

sorry to hear

sorry to hear about your car matey bet you spent a small fortune on it with all those things being replaced on my mk1 96 n reg had:

full exhaust apart from cat replaced

new plugs

new leads

1 tyre

sump

temp switch

total cost unknown but not as much as yours

my airbag light on also not sure why taking for service next week so hopefully get sorted then hope its ok from now for you scott.

You've failed to state what year the car is and what milage.

Given its a 1.4 its at least 5 years old so a cambelt would have been needed anyway.

Tyres, bulbs, brake discs and clutch are all wear items.

Gearboxes become wear items when people are unable to synchronise their feet and left hand correctly, it could have simply been that the last owner couldn't drive properly

A shagged one mate!!

Worked with Fiat from school, never as much grief as that!!!

Not that bad....

Depends how many miles you do and how many miles the car had on it.

Bulbs, tyres, clutches, brakes and timing belts are all expendable objects. I would have only picked the gearbox out as an odd one, the rest go at some point, just depends when.

I got my HLX with 45k on. Up to 69k she only needed nothing except the odd drop of oil, petrol, tyres and an exhaust.

at 70k I snapped a key in the boot, took the ariel and ariel holder off in a car wash, got sticky windows, door handle flaked, one fecked shock and a needed a new battery.

at 71k (without doing the other niggles) the cambelt tentioner went, along with every valve. After putting it back together (not through Fiat who wanted £2500) it needed new rubber o-ring on an injector, one ignition coil (arrives today) and this morning my exhaust seems like its fecked again , it sounds like a tractor!!!

Re: Not that bad....

Im glad to know im not the only person to have a shite one.

During the 16mths and 10k miles ive had my V reg sx ive had to replace

the front disks and pads
the exhaust
the clutch
2 indicator bulbs
4 tyres
petrol gauge (it kept saying empty)
Ive got a sticky passenger elect window
My radio "lost" its code
its developed what i can only describe as a sever shuddering when at crawl in traffic
and now it keeps popping out of 5th

I know the majority of these bits are expendable, but on a 50k car i wouldnt have expected to have needed to repalace the cluth and and i certanly wouldnt expect gear box problems

Re: Not that bad....

1.6 100sx 52 plate. 45k on clock

front pads.
tracking and tyre (i bought alloys instead of new tyre)
2 x front left shock. both replaced under warrenty.

NEEDS

New clutch
New Gearbox
New disc front
New drums Back
Bushes
and could do with injector cleaning

Mark - the disks pads bulbs and tyres are all wear items.

I would put money on the fact that popping out of 5th and the shuddering are caused by your new clutch being of poor quality and not being fitted correctly.

Re: Not that bad....

Oh yeah i forgot and a new aerial.

Jonathon thanks, i hadnt thought about that.

I had the cluth replaced the end of may and didnt even think about it causing the other 2 probs. ive got it booked in the garage this friday so ill mention it and if thats the case the clutch is still under warranty

Re: Not that bad....

Back two bits of exhaust
