Please could anyone advise me on what may be occuring with my car. While driving the other night there was a high piched whining comming from the front left/middle of the car, and whenever the revs increased the whining got higher piched. Any ideas, its a 1.6sx with full fiat survice history and had its last cambet change about 9 mounths ago.

Is it linked to revs or speed? Does it go away when you press the clutch?

And left as in sitting in the car or standing infront of it?

It is the revs that causes the noise to get higher piched not the speed. And sorry it is the left if you are sitting in the car so the passenger side. any ideas?

Sounds gearbox input related. Does it change if you dip the clutch?

if the cluch is dipped then the noise gets higher piched as the revs increase.

i know you said the noise was coming from the left but as you were driving at night it could be your alternator or belt making the noise

you'd smell the rubber if it was.

Doesn't sound like clutch bearing as that would change when you press the pedal. Could be many things, best go to a garage and get an opinion from someone who can look it over and listen for themselves.

if the belt was slipping yes tom but if the bearings in the alternator were on thre way out there would be no rubber smell eh

True, but it would be on the other side of the engine bay. :)

I hope its a shot alt or PAS pump as the other options are quite horrific.
