Looks like it's got straps built in to it - is that right?

The straps are there to tension up the foot mounts. It's a clever and robust system. You basically loosly position the bars on the roof with the feet clamps hanging loose. Then you use the little supplied crank to ratchet up the strap tension, which pulls the clamps into the feet and fixes it firmly onto the roof.
