Air flow sensor location ?

Air flow sensor location ?

Can anyone tell me where the airflow sensor is located pls?

I have decided to change it because I believe that it is the culprit for over-revving (2500-3000rpm) on cold starts, irregular revs during normal temperature, and endless backfire when engine breaking.

cheers lads

Normally they are just after the air filter on the engine side. If at all possible I would hook the car up to a diag and do a set of air mass readings before and after and see what difference is made.

Hi Nige, thanks for your reply, but isnt what you are referring to the idle air valve control? or is that the same thing as the air flow sensor?

The Idle control valve is in the throttle body, the MAF is what I was talking about - or as you put is Air Flow Sensor - a read like thingy that site in a housing after the air filter feeding back information such as.... the mass of air flowing being sensed... or MAF Sensor lol ;)

It backfires cos you have no cat, that is not related to the revving problem.

Either you have a shot map sensor or a shot idle valve actuator.

Well, as you might know my air cleaner is stuck on directly on to the throttle body, therefore removed all factory pipings and housing....does that mean I accidentally removed the map sensor as well??? Mind you I had done this about three weeks after purchasing my Bravo from new i.e. 7 and a half years ago!!!

So in your opinion it could either be the idle valve acutator or the map sensor. Which one is the most likely to cause this overreving trouble trouble?

On the Mk1 the map sensor is under a plastic cover at the back of the engine, joined to the manifold via a small pipe.

Do you have a suitable cold air feed to your filter?

To which manifold is the pipe joined to? To the inlet manifold or exhaust manifold? To say the truth, when I had my exhaust manifold changed about a year ago the overrevving had stoppped. Now it started all over again...and it started gradually.

Well the only cold air feed is coming from the slits that are on the wheel cover....but the air filter is located way back next to the battery. I wonder how cold the cold air remains until it reaches the air filter.

Its connected to the back of the inlet manifold, there are 2 pipes, a thick one for the servo and a skinny one for the MAP.

I'd say your problems are mostly due to hot air injestion.

Me thinks not...overreving occurs as soon as I fire up the engine from cold...then i dies down after the engine has warmed itself up and settles to an irregular idle rev of between 600rpm to 1000rpm.
I am sure that it is some kind of sensor coz I have heard that Fiats especially puntos suffer from this kind of thing....the thing is that i do not know what sensor this is.

I have ruled out the fact that the injectors need a pressurized clean out because that would mean that performance would be down...and luckily my engine is anything but down on performance...on the contrary, the more miles that pile up (65K miles) the better the performance.

How many times have you cleaned the filter?

You would actually get better performance with a proper filter setup. You can loose as much as 10% due to hot intake air.

To be honest I never clean the air filter...i just buy a new one every six months...its proved to be littel more costly but at least i would be gettin the chance to test and enjoy other makes of sports air filters....and some advice...I have found out that the best combination for sound and power is the Simota air cleaner the best...even better then Pipercross, K&N and Jamex.

Saves cleaning it ;) At £70 a go I'm not going to throw away my pipercross!

I still think you need a good cold air feed to the filter. And try a new idle control valve, the actuator in yours could be ****ed. A duff MAP sensor would give bad running, not erratic idle.

cheers mate...will tell you how i got on.
