Just had a brainwave which i really should have had ages ago...

I have an Xbox in my car and was wondering how large the memory is? Also is the memory a moving part inside? i ask because is it likely to jump?

How many CD's do you think you can you fit on an Xbox ?

Also what else can the memory be used for (other then saving games!) and can you upgrade it, make it larger etc....

Would the XBox take a Sat Nav programme?

Well there is a few questions to keep you all busy anyway!

Thanks

Paul R

I think you are talking about the Hard Drive and not memory. I have no idea how big the HD is, but one of the guys I work with was telling me that you can put a 80gig HD in them and also run Linux on them.

Ermmm, i hear this programme mentioned alot (linux) but what actually is it? :( Sorry about my stupidity but computers aint my things really! I do know that 80gig would be quite alot of space though, especially if i was to use it for only music!!!!

I know the XBox can be modified so that it can run Linux, therefore you could install that and put your MP3's on the XBox's HD. The HD though, does contain moving parts and would therefore be susceptible to juddering or movement, which can also cause permanant damage. If you could isolate this, you could be on to something.

I'm not really up on XBox (PS2 fan here ;)) but I know there is a large community of Linux XBox users. Do a Google and see what you find.

you can add a hdd to the ps2 as well now and it can be just about anything upto about 120gb in size.
me and my mate at work are gonna rip the ps2 apart and see what we can do, already thinking of running the dms mod chip. you can then run div x movies, copied games/dvds and you get an ps2 version of media player. now wheres my soldering iron ;)

The original X-box hard-drive is about 10gb.

Putting one in the car is fine, but you should mount it with the hard-drive verical, this way if you hit any hard bumps the reader (like a record needle) won't hit the plates inside the drive and damage them (even though the manufactures quote 250g shock resistance).

You can (as above) put a bigger hard-drive in them, i have a 120gb in mine, you can go higher but because of the OS it limits it to about 137gb, but you will need your x-box chipped first. ;)

I think we have around 35-40 games on the hard-drive plus about 1000 mp3's. :) (Saves you carrying loads of DVD's/CD's in the car)

Linux is an operating system, like windows is an operating system, except Linux is free and some believe better and more stable. It's quite a complex thing to get into, especially if you're a self confessed technophobe, but once it is installed, it works in a very similar way to Windows.

There are all sorts of versions of Linux out there, each developed by an individual or company with a specific need in mind. I particularly like the Dyne:Bolic distribution as it is written with media artists in mind. Red Hat is a good starting point, although that version is no longer free unless you go for the Fedora distro. Mandrake is probably the next best. Debian is good also.

But like I said, you do need to know your stuff if you plan to run and manage a Linux based system.

Might be easier to either find a dedicated XBox program or fit a PC in your car like some have on here.

(crossing his fingers and hoping everyone doesnt laugh at him!!!!)

What like windows?

paul i dont know if u noticed but stick a music cd in it and u can copy to the hard drive anyway u dont need to put linux. its already built in. they added it as a feature so when u play racing games instead of the crap they have u can play ur own stuff. i also believe with the dvd remote u can controle the music aswell, ill check to night.

to run linex u got to chip ur xbox with a switch over chip. u can then swap hard drives and install linux. but if u only gonna play mp3's or watch dvds u got it already in front of u.

Ok just caught up with everyones messages...

So the Xbox can basically be used as a mini PC, thats great as it is exactly what i wanted to hear... as i want to store all my cd's on it!!! That way i can remove my multichanger and use my aux in for my Xbox and have better quality sound rather then use the fm modulater!!!

I dont like the fact that is supposidly hard to use the linux programme! Is the programme in the X box not sufficent? as i save a cd on there today and it worked fine?

Is there a way that i can run sat nav through it then?

Also how much would al this likly to cost to upgrade memory and use it as sat nav? if it can be done!

Paul R

I doubt very much that you could use it for sat nav. Firstly there is no software for it and secondly, you would need a GPS system.

If you want Sat Nav in your car it would be better to get a dedicated unit.

CHRIST!!!! YOU LOT CAN REPLY BLOODY QUICKLY SOMETIMES!!!!!!

Right, i want to at least use it as a memory bank for music.... Now i know i can save games on there too thats great also!!!! I can basically be a real cheap scate and copy mates CD's straight into the Xbox!!!

Daz mentioned about how i mount it! which way up is that? verticle? if so that screws me up as i have spent ages making a mouting plate which is horizontal!!!

I am very interested in getting Sat Nav in the car but dont want to pay thousands of ££££ !!!

Where do i go for upgrading memory etc... is it just a PC shop thing or is it specialised?

Thanks for all your help so quickly!!!

Paul R

You can get sat-nav to work on an X-box :)

You need to install WinX '98 (windows '98 emulation software), Then install your GPS software as you normally would.

The controller ports are simply differently shaped USB ports, modify the port and get a USB GPS dongle :)

(desperatly looking for the Pc guide for dumbys book!!lol)

Right so i can use the Xbox and run Sat Nav!!! GREAT!!!

But you seem to speak a different language to me!! its that .com language, i can only just get my head around the internet and microsoft office but i am willing to learn!!!

alternatively i send you my Xbox and you sort it all out for me!!!lol.. only joking!!!

So what are my next steps????? Is this something i can do my self or do i need to send the box away or take it to a local pc repair man????

Where can i get all the required software? and hardware???

Mant thanks (thanks for your patience also!)
