Re: ohhhh

Hi,

GPS dongles or mice are (now) cheap to get - i saw one on maplins for about £16. I think the thing you need to look out for it response times, locking times etc. If its slow to pic op your position or update it, it will be irritating.

Also, GPS dongles need a clear view of the sky ie. you can't have the dongle in your pocket or something for it to work.

I will be getting one soon for my carputer. If i was looking for software I would get one that has voice output on it. Infomap navigator supposed to be good and its reasonably priced about £60 for Europe or about £40 for GB.

Re: ohhhh

i have a gps mouse off ebay and infomap navigator 7.0 GB. The mouse is very good and has not let me down whilst outside, it certainly would work in your pocket and will also work inside sometimes. Basically they need to be able to track 3 satellites with a good signal to get your position. I find mine normally picks up 5 as a minimum!

The software is very good, it shows you your position and route on a map on one half of the screen with clear directions via and arrow on the other half. it also announces the junctions before you get to them. Ontop of the price of the software you can get database updates which are about £15 each which you will need to do every now and again to ensure it is accurate.

There are 2 issues i have had so far;

once it tried its hardest to get me to go the wrong way round a roundabout

the other is that you really need to be able to see the screen whilst driving as the voice commands are not really sufficient. Sometimes it doesn't announce the next junction early enough for you to get into the correct lane etc so you need to be able to glance at the screen to check the arrow now and again. Due to this i find mine is a little inpractical as my laptop is very large and has to go on the passenger or rear seat. If you got a screen on the dash it would be ok. That is what i plan to do eventually!

cheers guys

cheers guys

how much is infomap 7.0 GB? and wheres best palce to buy it / cough.....cough download it

I would be having the laptop on the passenger seat, screen would be nice on dash but costs money etc.

if you miss a turning will the program re-route itself or does it throw a fit and tell you to get back to where it said or it isn't going to "play anymore!"

More feedback from others welcomed

Re: cheers guys

for a while the software thinks your on the road you should be on - it has a tolerance for inaccuracies in your position. After a while it twigs that you are on a different road and asks if you would like the route recalculating. If cost is of concern to you remember that you can only use it as long as your battery lasts! you can get different types of power supply but i had to get an inverter as none of the laptop in car power supply were powerful enough for my brick of a laptop!

Search for infomap, as said above its £40ish for the software with the GB database and £60ish for the software and the eurpoe database. i only have the gb copy, i think to install all the countries on the europe version takes about 4gb!

Re: cheers guys
