just wondering if anyone knows why there is a slight beigey coloured oil film on the oil filler cap. oil is a 10w 40 semi. mate reckons because the car is never used on a long journey, mainly short journeys.
car is a 00 bravo 1.2
any suggestions appreciated

Re: Re: sludge on oil filler cap

I always thought that white coloured sludge on the inside of the filler cap meant that water was mixing with the oil and that could mean the Head gasket is on it's way out. no...only me then.

Re: Re: Re: sludge on oil filler cap

Yes and no. If you do lots of short trips the engine never really warms up fully and you get condensation in the engine hence the sludge.

Now if it looks like someone has tipped an economy sized bucket of hellmans mayo into the engine THEN you have a problem :)

not a white coloured sludge, more like a beigey colured film on the oil filler cap, how often should i change the oil, once a year or twice a year.....

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: sludge on oil filler cap

assuming if the head gasket was on the way out which i doubt it, would have rising temperature gauge and steam coming out of exhaust. dont think head gaskets are a problem with this car??

A little bit of brownish sludge is normal.

Joe, if your trips are only short then you would benefit from changing your oil every six months, regardless of mileage. No matter how good modern oils are, if they don't get hot enough, often enough, then they become more and more contaminated as they don't burn off the impurities.
