1.8 engine differences!?!

As I've had a few problems with the engine in my '96 1.8 HLX, I decided to get the engine replaced!

I sourced an enigne from a '98 R with 48,000 miles on it but apparently when it got to the garage it was incompatible and was taken away!

The company that sourced the engine, said they have looked into it and there are supposed to be two different types of engine where the injection system is the main difference. Is this difference because of the change over between the 113 HLX and the 115 HLX!?!

The reason I'm so curious is that they have contacted me and told me that they have sourced the correct engine that would be compatible with my car. But this one is from a '98 S with 44,000 miles on it, so could this be a 'late registered' car where Fiat would have still been fitting the 113 engines!?!

The engine supplier is now very certain that having looked into it, this engine will be the right one for my car!

A 98 car is still Mk1.

Both the 1.8 and 115 are 113BHP but have different ECUs.

Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Cheers Tom, are you aware of there being any other differences or varitations in the mk1 engines or is the problem they encountered likely to have been with the different ecu's!?!

Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

ECU is main difference - Hitachi in mk2, but not sure of other differences. Mk2 cars came in March 1999 so 1998 S should definitely be mk1

Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Its costing me £500 deivered, with my knackered one as a swap which they come back and collect once the work has been done. You can take any bits you may need off your older engine but it shouldn't be necessary as the newer enigine comes complete with the clutch and manifold as well as a 6 month guarantee against it developng a fault once it has been fitted!

Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Who is the company your using?

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Universal Car 'summit or other'! Can't remeber the full name.

Have the phone number and details of the sales manager I've been dealing with if anyone needs them!

So far despite the incompatibility of the initial engine they deleivered which wasn't really their fault, I've been fairly impressed with their service. The sales manager I've been speaking to has been very polite and helpful!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Have you got the number, i havn't got e-mail at the mo as our e-mail is down,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Their number is 0845 609 9199 and the name of the of the chap I've been dealing with is Mark Harrison.

You having problems as well Aidey!?!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

I've got a very loud knocking noise coming from the engine but we can't identify it, so i think it'll be cheaper to do this that replace bit by bit until the problem is solved

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

How much is fitting it costing you?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 engine differences!?!

Fitting including a cambelt change, at a local 'non fiat' garage was quoted at £150 + parts and vat, so about £200 all in with cambelt, oil filter, oil, but i don't require an air filter coz I have an induction kit).

Not bad really. Some other garages especially ones affiliated with Fiat wanted more like £400 - 500!

As you say, with the labour charges and possible headaches of trying to hunt down a problem, its much easier to go down this route.
