Im looking at replacing an engine on a 1.6 bravo. thing is, my cars a P reg and the new engine is coming from a V reg. the engine codes are the same and ive been told by the breaker (who doesnt sound like your average grease monkey :) ) that theyre the same lump and the swap will work.

HOWEVER...

i also spoke to fiat and asked 4 their advise - they checked on part numbers and said that the engines are different. im guessin that the Part Numbers have changed over the years tho??...

Does anyone know the truth?

if they are different, what are the main differences i.e. will the new engine work in my car?

if you can help me, i will rate you above God himself!

Jay

Your will be the Mk1 engine 100bhp and the V reg will be the Mk2 engine 103bhp, I think they are the same engine except for that and the cam shaft cover being plastic instead of metal but don't quote me on that

Sy b says

but don't quote me on that (too late, already quoted:)

do both engines have the same numbers that look like this: 182A6.000
if they are the same, i cant understand why they wont swap. but then again, i'm sure fiat know a lot more about this than me.

mk1 and mk2 engine swap

I do belive that the Mk2 ECU/ignition system is different to the MK1. You may have to modify the existing wiring loom and other bits to successfully swap the engine. But don't quote me on that ;)

Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

Jay, out of interest how much will the new engine cost ?

Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

you may find that after you have changed your engine it won't start because there is a security code with the engine and E.C.U so the engine you purchase may have to have the E.C.U with it?

Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

SyB, the Mk1 is 103BHP, the Mk2 is 100 :)

Also the Mk2 has a plastic inlet manifold, not cam cover.

The ECUs are different between the Mk1 and Mk2 BUT they will probably run the other type engine.

Jay, why are you replacing your engine??

Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

i have a mk2 tom and it is definately 103
followed suit with the other models HGT from 147 to 155

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

The Mk1 is NOT 100 though. I'll check my book but I'm pretty sure the Mk2 is slightly less powerful.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

re(de?)-tuned for improved flexibility & tougher emmissions???

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

I think retuned for more torque as the Mk2 has different gearing to the Mk1 1.6.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

im replacing the engine coz my cambelt was changed by an ex-mate who assured me that anyone can change the cambelt without the locking tool that fiat use...

he was wrong. The cams wore the lifters to shite, some of the cams are wrecked and itd be cheaper to get a nu engine rather than just those bits.

oh wise one tom, does this mean i can use the vreg engine? i can its ecu, but im guessin my old key wont work with it and therefore i'll need to nab the ignition stuff aswell??

after hunting around various breakers this weekend, ive found an engine from another p reg 1.6 thats done 56K (£450).. bear in mind the v reg ones done 10K (£550)?

the Preg eng has more chance of workin, no?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

oh yeah, the engine codes are the same... same engine?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

Use the new engine with your old ECU, DO NOT change the ECU.

How the hell did the cam wear?? Changing the cambelt should not do that.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

theyre not worn as such, theyve become flat in places where theyve been bashin the lifters...

cheers boss, u i rate as the godly one

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

I still can't see how that happened after a cambelt change.... Was he a total monkey or something?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

yes, yes he was a monkey...
the cambelt was a tooth out before it was changed, this fool marked the belt up wrong thinking it was all in time and replaced the belt still out. i was told that theres a special fiat tool for locking the camshaft and he didnt use that. when i took it to fiat, the said the belt was 2/3 teeth out! sayin that after i took it to fiat, theyve made me spend nearly 600 squid on things that werent even busted, like a phase sensor?

i hate mechanics! did u say uv done a degree in it, if so which one and was the pay good after? im lookin at motorsport engineering at uni but im thinkin the money aint all that

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

The phase sensor is easily damaged during a cambelt change. It must have run like a dog!

I did electronic engineering, get paid enough :)

Oxford brookes does good motorsport courses. Cranfield is the best though!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mk1 and mk2 engine swap

im at brookes at the moment :)

the car wouldnt accellerate past 5k in third... it felt like a 1 litre.
