I am looking to getting a HGT But need a better idea of the running costs as i don't have loads of room in my budget from the 1.6 to the 2liter, Any prices on the following would be greatly appreciated,

Cost of petrol for 100miles, (1.6 is £10)
Cambelt change it is in the region of £700?
Full service,
and anything else you all can think off

Cheers Sy B

Hi Sy,

Okies running costs:

Fuel £40 will do me bout 240 miles (driving well not dead slow lol)

Cambelt is £900 at Fiat but i know Nige has had his done for bout £600 - £700?

Insurance will be more (Im 23 with 5 yrs NCD an the best i found last year was £1000. I will have 6 yrs this dec so im hopping for about £850 ish.

err.... what else.... I guess thats the main differences.

:)

Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

Infact that run back down the A50 we had cost me bout £15

......go on ..... you know you want one :) :)

Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

The cambelt was £730 but that was including the tensioners AND a 24,000 service (which includes plugs and a brake fluid change) which normally costs about £240.

Apart form that the running costs arent that much different from anything else. You fuel economy will be worse but unless you do high milage its not a great deal. I averaged about 29MPG over the last 5,000 in mine but that was mainly motorway stuff - albeit at high speed.

Therefore if you average 35mpg on your 1.6 ever 500 miles will cost you an extra £9.77 at £3.30 per gallon (75p per lite approx) - whats that, 3 pints and a big mac meal!

Go for it!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

F**kin Hell!!! - Okies what insurance was that?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

I recently got a HGT, £38 of fuel at 76.9p got me 315 mile, that was 2 60 mile runs and the rest pottering back and fore to work stuck in traffic. when I bought the car I did just over 300 mile on £29 from empty and had a long motorway run home which it enjoyed. i find it more economical on a run as most cars are.

Insurance I got for just over £600 26 with 4 yrs no claims from AXA, worth a shot or try www.confused.com, enter your details and they get the quotes for you. This is where I cam across AXA.

Umm the only other thing I have got is a new clutch slave cylinder £80 fitted and new Osram Silver Star bulbs but they were not essential, just fancied some new bulbs.

That is about all the info i can give you so far

Hope it helps

HGT running costs are high - make NO mistake.

As well as your increased insurance, you're unlikely to get many parts from the breakers as they're thin on the ground to start with. Fuel "economy" isn't too bad, but correct servicing aint cheap, neither are the tryes or anything else for that matter as a lot of running gear is "relatively" scare from a Motorfactor.

Added to that, you've got approx £7/800 for your cambelt change, which MUST include the tensioners too as they're just as important. Fiat's electrics aren't renowned for their accuracy or relaiblity either.

On balance though, where can you get 155bhp or so, for the money? Come to think of it, add the £800 on again for teh camblet change and there's quite a few cars to choose from.

Honda's are a good example. Civic 1.6 VTi = 159bhp, something to think about?

NB Civic = dull (but ultra reliable).
Fiat = stylish (but not very relaible).

Like it or not, it's true. sorry Chaps.

Have you got a HGT Roger?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

A fe wgood points there Roger, but also i've never had any problems with the electrics on my car except when i've flooded it by driving through a ford (no car jokes lol) in fact i've had no faults with the car apart from the usual ie starter motor etc

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

Sy - What insurance company was that?

I must also admit i dont agree with all Rogers quotes but hey :)
