How do you reset the ECU?

How do you reset the ECU?

I don't think it's a DIY job, if thats what your after..I'm sure (unfortunatly) it's a dealer job..

But saying that i havent got a clue what i'm talking about...lol...Tom or Nige will confirm, they seem to know what they are talking about. (except when concerning colours of cars, make sure yours is not white, if it is get it resprayed, before the ribbing starts)

Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

Does this have any effect on other parts of the car? e.g. HLX alarm. I know radio stations will be lost, but anything else important?

Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

No idea :)

All I know is my JVC radio looses its settings.

Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

I agree with that!!!
Disconnect the battery.

You may have to reinitialise the alarm and also make sure u have any codes for you stereo

Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

All the dealer can do is reset the fault code log. They cannot reset anything else.

Basically the programming is set in stone within the ECU and can only vary a very small amount to deal with variations in petrol grade, temperature, air pressure etc.. Thats why induction kits, exhausts etc.. do so little without doing something to the ECU.

Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

So..does disconnecting the battery for a few hours do anything?

Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

Yes, it makes the ECU forget its learnt settings. That cannot be done by the diag machine.

ECU's use an averaging system to learn the exact engine characteristics. This is to stop short term problems (bad petrol) from bollocking the values too much.

You need to drive for about 20 mins to make the ECU start learning. Some people say to thrash it up and down the gears but that will do no good. The ECU only learns during steady speed driving. When you boot it, the ECU just goes 'sod this' and ignores the lambda sensor readings completely.

BTW, my 3rd year thesis was on fuel injection :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

@Tom "3rd year thesis" smarmy git..lol

I have unplugged cleaned/sprayed re-plugged the 'girly' plug just underneath the throttle-bod, with no effect, do you think resetting my ECU will help my problem?

I dont know where we would be on this forum without Tom, he is the font of all knowledge.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

depend on the model of the ECU. Some model, by disconnecting the battery supply will reset the ECU. As for Brava 1.6 and Marea 1.6 disconnecting the battry supply do not reset the ECU.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

You need to disconnect the battery for a minimum of 30 minutes. When you reconnect, the ecu setting are reurned to factory standard, including your potentiometer position - although I dont think this is your problem Daz.

You may need your radio code if you have the standard Fiat one, although I never have strangely. In fact when Fiat had my engine out the other week, they didnt need the code although I offered it to them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

No i removed the standard radio..

Well, it may not be my problem, but it won't do any harm. (I hope)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

Yes it does.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

I still think its something to do with the throttle. If he comes to the reading meet I'll have a peek.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

I believe that there will be many battey disconnected Bravo's tonight in search for more power...suppose it should add another 100bhp right? :)

Tom I didnt know that you were a Mechanic graduate. I did sense it though.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

Maybe not 100BHP. :) I have located a source of unprogrammed, fully programmable ECUs that are a direct replacement for the IAW unit in the 1.6. A bit costly though.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

As a Mk1 1.6 owner, this could definetely interest me. How many $$ does it relieve you from? Do you have to programme it like a piggyback chip? Or is it just fit and go?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How do you reset the ECU?

Its a new ECU, take the old one out and bin it. The new one is unprogrammed so its a few hours on the rolling road just to get the car started. :)
