Strange engine noise

Strange engine noise

I have just bought a Fiat Brava S 1996 model last weekend. Driving around is fine, but on some journeys I hear a kind of metallic "ticking" sound when I'm using the accelerator. If I release it, the "ticking" sound slows down so I figure this is something to do with the revs. But it just doesn't seem a normal noise - especially when most journeys don't have that noise.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Cheers,
Neil

Re: Re: Strange engine noise

The mileage is 57800 and the engine is a 1.4. Sorry, I meant to say that!

Re: Re: Re: Strange engine noise

Most likely is the alternator. Could also be cam tensioner or camshaft.

First job would be to make sure the little fan on the front of the alternator is not bent.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Strange engine noise

I'll take a look, but if it was the alternator, wouldn't it do this on every journey? For me, I only get this noise on SOME of my journeys (which is the strange thing!) - and it might have gone away if I turn off the car for 5 minutes and then come back to it.

In fact, yesterday, when in a traffic jam, I switched off the engine and then turned it back on and the noise had gone away although this could just have been luck.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, I'll take a look. It's very weird, that's for sure!

Cheers,
Neil

It will be heat related, something is expanding/contracting and hitting something else.

It could always be something like a worn tappet. I think the 1.4 is well known for bad oil flow to the head.

How black is the oil?

my car has a ticking sound too.
i have been told by 2 sources that it is normal and it is the fuel pump.
drive your car in 5th gear slowly and then pump the accelerator open and closed, not so as to make the car jolt, just listen for the noise increase in relation to how far your accelerator is pressed and not your engine rpm.
fuel pumps do make a slight noise especially when running at full flow i.e. 100% throttle

Re: Re: Strange engine noise

I get a similar noise from my HGT, i just thought it was my exhaust, maybe i'll have another check.

Re: Re: Re: Strange engine noise

I cant hear nothing except my exhaust.

Re: Re: Re: Strange engine noise

Could be the injectors. Does the noise does not occur straight away from cold, and you can hear it under light throttle (over this the induction/exhaust noise will mask), and only hear it from the drivers seat?
One way to be absolutely sure is to take the revs up to about 2000rpm, then take you foot completely off the accelerator pedal. As the engine speed drops down you will hear the injectors suddenly ticking at about 1100rpm (5cylinder - not sure for the 4's), this is the ECU going from Fuel cut off (ie no driver request input), to Fuel cut recovery (I.e required fueling to catch idle and stop engine stalling).
If the noise only occurs when you do this, and is quite when you first lift off (ie go into fuel cut), then it is most likely that the injectors are noisy. I'd guess your mileage is around 60 -65000 miles plus???
Mine have been doing this for 20,000 miles, and injector cleaner quitens them for a few weeks before the noise comes back (before you ask, I use Shell mostly, or other decent brand fuel such as Texaco occasionally...).

Hope this helps.
Of course if the ticking occurs all the time, and is engine speed related then this is not the problem.... so please follow the wise words of the others...
