Ok, Mk2 Punto 1.2 8v again, not bravo (sorry) please anyone any experience of this:-

Happening now quite often - I'll be driving (or idling)suddenly things will go a bit rough, next sec. the revs are going up on their own (to about 5000+!!!). I just have to put the clutch down and hope for the best (can be very embarrising at the lights!).

Any ideas? I don't think it's mechanical (the throttle cable and linkages are OK), also the revs will decide to go through the roof if you're in the car or stood outside it as it idles. Eventually they go back down again to just above normal - then they might take off again. It's doin my head in! Gone to Fiat dealers today, (as there is no warning light on I'm expecting the call at any moment to say it's OK). I'm really playing the "potential hazard of unsolicited acceleration" card to try get some action!

Anyone experienced this? Like to know I'm not alone!

Cheers
Mick

i had a car which used to really die down at the lights when you pulled up, it would really shuder as if it was about to stall then pick up again, but it never went as high as that! That was due to a faulty vacuum advancer but i never had it changed, too pricy.

Sounds like a dodgy sensor or something but i really haven't got a clue!

Re: Re: rpm increase, foot nowhere near throttle!!!!!

sounds like your throttle cable is getting stuck

Re: Re: Re: rpm increase, foot nowhere near throttle!!!!!

No the cable is OK - it's not sticking. It can increase from idle on its own, go up and down a few times the go back to somewhere near normal(usually a few hundred rpm high)even if you're stood by the car letting it idle.

I need this sorting even if Fiat don't do it (it is under warranty) - it can be a bit fckin scary.

Ghosts?!?!?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: rpm increase, foot nowhere near throttle!!!!!

Check your Lamda Sensor and your Idling Valve.

Thanks,

Syed.

Cheers for the input lads,

I'd already thought of ghosts! - I need a good Italian Catholic Priest for the exorcism (under warranty?).

Seriously though, heard nothing yesterday from those mothers at Dixons yesterday, so gave them a ring at 5.00pm - hadn't got round to it yet!

I guess they might today - I'll let you know the verdict.

New ECU!!!

Finally got my car back from Dixon Fiat Horsforth on Friday, after nearly 2 weeks!!!

Anyway credit to those folks in service there for sitting up and taking it seriously at last.

They changed the throttle body first (on a mk2 punto this includes idle stepper motor & pot etc...). They took it for three long test drives and it f*cked up again. Result - new ECU - which took some waiting for.
So, to cut a long story short, it's sorted!!!

Not often praise for a fiat dealership, but I got a courtesy car + tank of fuel in mine when I got it back!!!

Re: New ECU!!!

Glad you got it sorted in the end...

Just some info in case it happens again, my g/f's brother has a new punto, with the same problem...

As he pulled up to lights etc.. the revs would shoot up to the redline, they replaced lots of sensors, ECU etc.. and it was sorted.

Fiat said it was the ECU...but...his mate is working in the sales room, and when he seen his car in the garage he had a nose about to see what the problem was.

He claims that it was not the sensors or ECU, but a split air breather pipe was the real problem.

Luckily like you his was under warranty...but if it wasn't it would have cost him big style..

so if anyone else has this problem, try changing the air breather pipes first..it will only cost you a couple of pence for the pipes, it may save you some cash and all the hassle..

Re: Re: New ECU!!!

Daz, thanks for the valuable information. Unfortunately I am getting both of these mishaps.
When I pull up somewhere, or while manouvering to park, the car almost dies out and then picks up again. Many a time it will just die out altogether and have to restart.

I used to have the excess revving to, but I dismantled the idle airvalve control (thanks to the fix-a-bravo guide) cleaned it out with WD40 and its good again. There still remains the problem that in the morning I still get excess revving...more than than the automatic choke is supposed to give out!!!
