Not starting??

Hi,

Can someone help me with a small problem my Brava has developed? It's a 1.6 16v.
When i start it up the starter motor turns the engine but just as it should start it seems to disingage and i have to try again (it can sometimes turn the engine once or twice or sometimes not at all).
Could it be electrics or injectors?(though has the same problem starting on gas )
It can take about 6 or 7 tries to get her to finally start and once she's going there's no problem keeping her going just starting.
There are no warning lights on the dash other than normally are on at startup.
And if it has anything to do with it i have noticed sometimes when changing gear it feels as though it decelerates a little more than normal.

Re: Re: Not starting??

No Martin there is no mechanical damage
the engine sometimes starts fine but more often latly it's being a bitch to start (and it's getting embarassing in car parks)

re not starting

your starter motor stop's turning the engine?
It may be the starter motor dog /solenoid not holding in long enough to start the engine.

The dog part of the starter motor is the part that has teeth on and engages starter the fly wheel. some have a clutch in it may be u/s.
Or the solenoid which engages the starter dog this also may u/s if you are getting short engine turning.

Re: re not starting

Would taking the starter out and giving it a good clean and lub up correct this if this is the fault or does it need fixing with a new one?

re:re:re starter motor

You may need a new one.

The starter dog should free turning one way and drive the other.

The solenoid it's either out and not working or in and working unless it's u/s.

Re: re:re:re starter motor

Thanks lads,

Looks like i'm stripping the motor out of it for a start off.

Re: Re: re:re:re starter motor

Rab, lately I have also noticed that the idle air valve control has a big effect on the way the engine behaves.

If the idle air valve control is too dirty than the engine will not be able to start is the valve control will not be able to start up the revs. One way to know the truth is to try and start the engine with the throttle depressed. If it dies start immediately than it is the idle air valve control that needs a really good cleaning.
