1.8 poor running PLEASE HELP!!

Hi, I have a 98 1.8 with 35k on the clock, it has become very sluggish as if it isn`t running properly going up hills or under acceleration, it just won`t pull even when my foots to the floor.

Does anyone have any ideas?? just had new plugs and oil change a few thousand miles ago and was ok after it, just seems to now have developed a fault.

Any help much appreciated.

What behaviour does the revcounter show when the car is idling?

A few questions:

Does the injection light still go out as normal?
Does it ever come on when driving?
Does it idle smoothly?

Could be injector related but I'd expect the light on the dash to come on.

Next time you are driving and its doing that, try lifting your foot off the gas just a little and see if it keeps doing the same, gets better or gets worse.

My HGT inj light has been on since and emergency stop on Sunday. Despite all my "tricks" the bugger wont re-set, maybe this time it really is ****ed. However I am just having a major service AND cambelts etc done so I am going to rewire the bugger when the engie is out!

Sounds like its shaken something loose. The service should show up the fault.

Its such a pain that the diag ports on ECUs are so hard to decode. All post 2000 (I think) cars have the ODB2 interface which anyone with a £40 quid adapter and some free software can plug into. Why did they not introduce that earlier?!?

odbc connectors and software

where can you get this software for diagnoses
and can you run it of a laptop? any links would be usefu;

Hi, none of the lights come on, but it does sometimes feel as if it wants to go if you tickle the thottle a bit. Cheers for the help.

Sounds like its running lean... GOK why. Only 35 on the clock you'd not expect it to have a duff lambda or blocked exhaust.

Does it get used for lots of really short trips? Less than 5 mins or so? Don't suppose you have the emissions report from the last MOT?

I'd say run a bottle of injector cleaner just for the hell of it and a few tankfulls of BP super love juice and see what happens.

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 poor running PLEASE HELP!!

Search the net for "ODB ii" or "ODB 2". There are alot of places to get the bits from, some kits, some ready made.

The connector should be in the cabin somewhere, not the little jobbie at the back of the engine bay.

It was law in the US in 1996, not over here until 2000. Bastards!

Only £4k for a pre-2000 fiat diagnostic box. Anyone want to donate? :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 poor running PLEASE HELP!!

i find if the injector light or any other warning light comes on it can be fixed so easily! Just take the bulb out, or if you are going to be selling the car take the bulb up, hook it to about 36v to blow it, then put it back in! Works every time :)

unless the car aint working, then it doesn't fix it, incase you couldn't work that bit out! lol
