I own a 98 2.0 HGT 5 cylinder 20 valve.

My concern is this, I have a strange noise that can only be described as a wheeze noice that is coming from I think the air con unit. It is definately not anything to do with the drive as noise increases and decreases with the rev of the engine. People at work say its not normal and people can hear me comin from a mile away when im driving at speed.

Does anyone have any advice of what it could be ??

its probably bearings. i just had some go on my HGT. it was a tensioner and altenator bearings, runs sweet now. to check run the engine and place a long screwdriver on the parts you suspect may be faulty and put your ear on the other end. if you can hear noisy scracty nises then its bearings and fairly easy to fix and usaually cheap.

Cheers for your advice, I think you could be right as i have pinpointed the noise to the alternator so bingo. Can i ask how much did you pay for your repairs ? I have it booked in the garage on Monday and dont want to get ripped off.

i had two things done on mine at once. the altenator itself cost about £40 to have new bearings put in at a motor factors. i also had a belt tensioner done at the same time which was about £50 for the part. labour was £45 and all plus VAT, ended up with a stinging £170 ish bill! also the tensioner took a day to source so it was in parts overnight! good luck

p.s. they may also try to sell you a reconditioned altenator which will add about £40 onto the price (£80 in total for altenator). i would try to get it recopnditioned first tho.

Belt Tensioner

Hi again, Can i ask where on earth did you get your tensioner replaced for as cheap as you did. The best quote i have had is approx £450 which inc 10 hours labour. Apparantly they have to strip half the engine down just to get to it. Called Fiat direct and there quotin £750 !!!

Send me a miracle for my bank balance friend. Have you got a contact number of where you had yours done as if i can save over 200 quid then ill drive the length of the country !
