Disable Passenger Airbag

Is there any way to temporarily disable the passenger side airbag on the Fiat Brava SX 80 (1.2 litre). The passenger seat will need to be used sometimes for a rear-facing child seat and sometimes for an adult.

airbag

fraid not matey, page 87 of the manual
"severe danger if the car has a passenger airbag, do not place the child seat on the front passenger seat"
And no mention of being able to turn it off.

In that case is there any hack that I could use e.g. putting a switch across the passenger airbag controls?

Re: airbag

I was thinking that maybe there is a fuse protecting this airbag. I've got no manual and can't find and info on the net. Anyone got any ideas where I might look?

Re: Re: airbag

Personally I wouldn't want to mess about with anything remotely to do with the airbag. Remember it is an explosive device, and safety critical as well. The last thing you would want is it going off for no reason as you are driving down the road. They are extremely loud and the shock in itself would almost guarantee that you crash! My main worry would be that an incorrectly or badly fitted bodge job could cause a deployment, not to mention the possibility of it not going off in an accident, with the insurance ramifications of that!

For the relatively short period that the rearward facing baby seat would be required, you should consider living with it in the back.

Sorry to be so miserable about it, but I was worried enough about this problem that I bought another car! The problem I had was that it wasn't possible to fit a baby seat in the back of a Tigra AND have a pushchair in the boot. So as I couldn't disable the airbag, and Vauxhall refused to, I had no choice but to sell the car. Sounds drastic, but it was probably time to change it anyway!

Re: Re: Re: airbag

Thanks for your advice Nick. I share your concerns. I know in some cars you can turn off the passenger air bag and in others it senses the weight of the occupant (if any) in the passenger seat and automatically turns off the airbag if unoccupied or very light weight (e.g. baby). With this in mind I was wondering if it was possible to do something like this with the Brava.

This will be child number 3 and the Brava is my wifes who would prefer to have the baby in front when she is driving without me (or some other adult who could watch all three kids in the back). The other 2 kids are 1.5 and 3 years old. The 1.5 year old needs a baby chair. Might get away with a booster seat for the 3 year old (he's too young for the front seat). Then maybe they will all fit in the back - but difficult to keep an eye on them when driving.

I'm rambling now, but the upshot is it would be best if I could turn off the airbag. But if this is open to problems then I'll leave it alone.

airbag

just to clarify your comments the brava/o does actually sense if their is anyone in the front seat and if after 20 seconds of the engine being turned on their is insufficient weight in the passenger seat then the airbag automatically switches off.
However me thinks the babyseat would be enough weight to keep it on. Not worth it matey stick em in the back.

Re: airbag

Ive disconnected the passenger airbag in the past(it nearly fell out so had to bolt it back in properly!!) - its all the yellow wires - if you unplug them it should switch off the airbag, but then it may disable all airbags....?

To be fair if your not sure dont bother messing when its your kids safety at risk...but thats obvious

Dont take my word for it either - best to see a pro if u really want to use the rear facing seat

Re: Re: airbag

If its true that your Brava has a weight sensing switch in the passenger seat, then this would be the way to disable the airbag safely. You would need to move the switch to a position where it cannot be pressed ie remove it from its housing and tape it up so it can't be pressed by someone in the seat. Then the bag is disabled but you havn't had to tamper with the electronics at all.

This is the principle, but I have no idea where or how the switch is fitted in the passenger seat.

Anybody have any comments?

Nick
