As the title says. I too am very interested in turbo'ing my Marea 20v. I've been looking at the conversions on the MARIANI site, who I've been told are one of the biggest tuners in Italy, it will cost about £2500 to buy, then it needs importing and fitting.
The owner of BETACARS is an old friend of mine and I am sure if we can get enough peeps we would get a good price.
I've also spoke to L&M tuning about it, they seem to think that cost would outway the advanteges and u would be better of buying a Coupe Turbo.

Let me no what u think as group it might be worthwile.

Turbo

I'm trying to get some more information from ForzaTuning at the moment, but there not that helpful.
I agree it would be cheaper to buy a coupe, but the Bravo HGT is quite rare, which makes it worthwhile, I think.
I have been wanting to get mine done for ages, but it won't be for a few months yet, I'm in the middle of buying a house, so until thats done and settled I'll leave the car for now. But it will be done, definatley.
I have spoken to an engine builder who, although he has little FIAT experience, thinks the coupe and HGT engine are the same block, which means same mounting points, just with a modified head to account for the different compression etc of a turbo.
I'm after getting 250 BHP out of it, not too difficult and won't strain the drivetrain too much.
Let me know your thoughts, I want to get as many idea's as possible.

Re: Turbo

If u fit a turbo u will have to lower the compression ratio of the engine, this is mainly done by diff' pistons, not modified heads.
There may be an easier/cheaper route, what about fitting a new generation supercharger the new ones are basically a modified turbo charger, instead of being exhaust driven it is mechanically driven.
Having studied the engine bay I believe that if u were to remove the A/C compresser u could replace it with the supercharger.
Superchagering offers many advantages, less stress on the engine, less heat, more compact and less to go wrong, the power is also instant and does not rely on the turbo to spool up.

Re: Turbo

250 BHP through the front wheels? Not really an ideal situation due to the amount of torque steer it will produce. A way around this is to get a traction control system, which means spending even more money.

supercharger

Would this be a cheaper option than the turbo? I thought the idea of dropping a coupe engine in was a good one and getting some money back for my hgt engine? or just buy a coupe which are good looking cars!!!

slave cylinder

Hi Spyder,

You seem to be the man in the know? my slave cylinder has gone on my hgt any idea how much it is going to cost to be replaced?

cheers

Mark

Re: slave cylinder

Sorry Mab m8, I haven't a clue.
Someone here mentioned Avanti Motorsport, I don't think theese guys have a clue about 5 cylinder 20v, they may no alot about the old twin cams.
The 20v engine is a very different engine and quite a specialized unit.
Turbo charging is not as straight forward as everyone thinks u simply do not bolt it on and tune.
Droping in a Coupe engine would be straight forward were it not for the very complex engine management and other computers on the car. One of the main probs' is the fact the coding for the keys, immobolizer and others spurious info is held in the ENGINE MANAGEMENT. So if u were to install another engine and matching ECU(engine management) then the codes for keys and immobolizer would be diff'.
If u were to ask Fiat to recode everything to match then u are talking at least £1,000.
I believe there are two options and both require using the original engine,
1) Fitting an after market turbo kit
2) Fitting a supercharger

Remember also that this amount of power thru front wheels would induce massive torque steer. The Coupe has what is called a VISCOUS DRIVE to try and aliminate this. I no many coup drivers who have also fitted traction control.
Viscous drive is a mech' unit which equalise the power transmision , good but not perfect.
Traction control is an electronic device that measure wheelspin and backs of the throttle by reducing the engine fuelling.

The end thank f?ck for that.

Supercharging ?

Spyder,

In theory does this mean you could supercharge any engine ? i.e. 1.4/1.6 not just the 2.0

What extra power would you get

Re: Supercharging ?

In short yes, if u can find one to do the job.

Supercharging ?

Thought so, i've enquired with someone already and awaiting and answer

Re: Supercharging ?

evo~paul let me no how u go, as I'm very interested in any info u get.
cheers m8

Supercharging ?

Ok Spyder,

Guy has come back to me, says that Supercharging will almost cost the same as Turbocharging and he says the cheapest way to go is NOS.

He can do NOS with computer which progessively controls the amount of NOS according to how you accerlerate.

He also says he can probably sort out turbo for about 3k

Re: Supercharging ?

Yeh have looked at NOS, but just doesn't feel right and if its not prop' installed it will destroy your engine.
Would be interested to no which garage u spoke to, if u don't mind that is.
I'll investigate further about turbo and supercharging, but as I'm movin soon it might take back seat for a while.
Let me u no what u decide and how u get on.
Going to BETACAR tommorow to talk about normal tuning i.e porting, balancing and may be blueprinting my engine. It all depends on how much tho.

Cheers evo~paul.

Supercharging ?

No worries Spyder.

Guy i spoke to was Tony, informed him that people on the forum was interested.

Go to www.rudecar.co.uk for contact info

The NOS option is £1500 so will have to start saving a bit first, will let you know

Insurance

I think you'll have a nightmare getting insurance if you run NOS. I'm not sure if its legal on public roads, either.

You might want to get an insurance quote before you decide to go for it.

NOS does work well: one theory is that it's less harsh to the engine than a turbo, partly because it isn't running all the time, and partly because it can phase the power in more gradually.

Have you thought of running your car on nitro????

NOS

NOS is completely legal, it doesn't blow your engine, and what the insurance man doesn't know !!!!

Isn't Nitro the same as NOS ( Nitrous Oxide )

Nitro vs NOS

NOS is nitrous oxide (or laughing gas), which releases oxygen when it burns, basically you're adding more oxygen to the fuel/air mix.

Nitro is nitro methane, which is used in dragsters. It's more an explosive than a fuel, and gives off a caustic gas when it burns. It's used instead of petrol, it has triple the calorific value of petrol...I don't recommend it for road use!

It'd be pretty hard to hide the NOS after an accident, you'd be in deep **** if anything went wrong and the insurance company found out.

Nos Details

I've also looked extensivley into Nos as an alternative to a turbo to increase the Performance of my Bravo 1.6 100sx. And every one I have spoken to has given mainly positive results. As long as you don't have big jets and keep the Kit under 30 bhp there should be no damage done to the engine, as long as it's not used all the time that is.

Some details of Nos company's, the kit types and money involved.

Nos. Big blue bottle (used in the Fast and the Furious) a wet kit that is not really suitable for my engine. The base kit is 40bhp and retails for about £580

NX: Dry base kit starts with jets that deliver 30bhp for 600ish quid. Comes with cool looking white bottle, DIY instructions and all the bits you'll need for the install and should go up to 100 bhp (this is the kit I'll probably go for with the remote turn on button).

Nitrous solutions: aka Nos Wizard based in Doncaster http://www.noswizard.com/ The Ecoblaser 100i dry base kit starts at £450 and that's with jets that will deliver 25 bhp it comes with DIY instructions and all the bits to do the install the kit is capable of delivering 100bhp.

I've got a few more websites on my favourite at home. The Noswizard site was the only one I could remember of the top of my head. If any one wants me to post the other websites just say so.

Hope this helps you out.

NOS?

I am still unsure about nos, but have spoke to a few peeps who say it is not as bad as use to be.
so may be a viable option, have u had it done to your car and if so what results.
Any more info would be much appreciated.
Cheers spyder.
