could someone explain what some of the dashboard symbols means under the spedometer.
there is one next to the direct beam light. its red and looks like a cylinder at a 45 degree angle with some thing coming out at each end. i have a brava 1.4 sx (1996). its been coming on whilst i'm driving.

Oh dear!!

That sounds very much like it is the fuel injection system warning you of a problem. I had this fault on my HGT for ages and on mine I always lost power when it came on. I have had a number of items replaced to cure it, all under warranty, which I would guess you wouldn't have by now on a 1.4.

Just to frighten you further here is the bill..

Throttle Holder £240 (I don't know if this was part of this cure to be honest!)
Potentiometer £160

And there is 1 days labour as well.

Same Happened on my 1.6....

The injector had failed - it was running on 3 cylinders for a while - I was 100miles from home - cost £270+ to replace - rip off, but I had a 3rd party Warranty, which was handy....

intermittent infection light

My injection light comes on aswell! But this does not happen very often! I have noticed that it will only come on in hot weather!(around 25C) Which is not very often considering the poor UK weather!

Also my fuel comsumption seems pretty bad! I average 300-330miles in the summer from a full tank and 270-300 miles in winter! I have a 97 1.8HLX. I do half A-roads (50-80mph) and half in london traffic. Is this normal?

I can only get 300/350 if i drive a roads at around 80mph!

i think it also depends on where you get your petrol from, one week i got a tank from sainsburys and got 330 but the next tank i got from BP only did 270 and i drove no differently. my average is 310 considering i only go up and down the A40 in west london.

seems pretty poor

mine does about 380 miles at the momment, in the summer its about 450. still think the needle moves too quickly. thats motorway and town driving 80-90mph
