very strange i know - but its loud and embarassing when this happens! Usually on cold, or if the car has been sitting there for a few days. I have an HGT R reg 98, well serviced and looked after
its driving me up the wall!

You'll probaly find it's the small clutch in the starter motor which is designed to allow a little slip but gets carbon and dust ingress which then makes a noise. Sometimes disappears on it's own, more apparent on cold dry days. Could take the motor out and blow out the dust if you're feeling adventurous.

Different screech is alternator (or power steeering belt) after start up but that keeps screeching until battery is recharged after the start.

sounds more like the starter motor, i remember starting a thread some time ago discussing this, but haven't manged to do anything about it,as the weather has been warm. Its coming back though.
However, have you seen the HGT engine? - its a bloody nightmare trying to get to the starter motor, need to take loads of parts out - unless someone else has a short cut?

Belts

Sounds like it's a sliping belt. As this is the cheapest option to repair suggest you get these adjusted first.

I had the same prob and had it diagnosed as being the fan belt. I had it tightened and lubricated and it hasnt made the noise since.
