Hi, can anyone help. I have a 98' ducato 1.9D. which is kicking out loads of smoke!!!

The crankshaft needed regrinding, but had gone past the point of repair, so i was able to find another engine (parts only) in a scrapyard. I removed the crank and replaced mine. Now even though the engine was supposed to be the same 230A2 the crank was a lot lighter. Even so i was desperate because these engines are hard as hell to find so i done that.

The problem is now, after i have put it all back together it will not run properly  It will fire up, and run for about 30 seconds, but is putting out loads of white smoke, and eventually dies. The accelerator pedal also has no effect.

I took the head off, thinking oil in the bores. There was some about half a cupfull in each (By the way, engine started and ran fine before i took it apart, except for the knocking). I have had the head skimmed, and replaced the gasket, set the timimg and still the same thing is happening. Loads of white smoke and no control or very little accelerator.

What could be wrong!
I have repaired many engines in the past with little real knowledge on how they work, diesel & petrol, but this has got me stumped.
I'll buy a pint to anyone who can can help me get it running :)

Hi Ducato Boy,
I have spent 45 years in the motor trade and was beat by the same problem on a 1.9 turbo which I rebuilt.Took weeks to sort but eventually got it down to the glow plugs.Perfect before strip down and clouds of white smoke afterwards with 30 second runs.Put new glow plugs in, wait for light to go out then waite another 5 to 10 seconds and fire up. Feel sure she will go. Good luck. Derickp
