Hi all. I am fitting a 2.8 JTD engine (8140.43S) from a ducato (244) to a Talbot express.
I have the wiring harness and wiring diagrams. I am looking for an ecu but didn't realise how many different part numbers and software versions there were. The van the engine came from has long gone so the only info I can give is its from a late 2002 with no EGR valve, no Air flow meter and no heater plugs. It only has a flame start manifold heater and a boost pressure sensor.
If anyone could point me in the right direction as regards ecu type or if you have an engine similar to my one share your ECU number that would be very helpful. Thanks

I think I am in such a category like yours.
What way did you choose?
What option did you settle for?

Many people fit this engine to the talbot express motorhomes, but the older version with the mechanical injector pump. So I know the engine does physicaly fit. Most people avoid the JTD because of the electrical side. But since I am an auto electrician I thorght I would take the JTD option.

Hmmm.

Gain access under bonnet.
Unclip screen washer hose, and secure to one side.
Secure bonnet release cable to one side.
Remove 2 off M6 washer faced nuts, of which the rearmost has restricted finger tip access.
Pull plastic ECU cover clear, and move to rear as it does not seem to clear the air filter. (I have not previously attempted this in 15 years of ownership.)
Take photos as necessary.
Replace ECU cover, and restore vehicle to normal state.
Process photos and attach to post.

Perhaps the above merits a few progress reports to the forum.

Thanks for the illustration.
I have come to realise that the bosch number (0281010931) is pretty much the same from 2002 to 2006, its the fiat oe number that changes, as you can see from the picture there are 6 different fiat numbers with the same bosch number.
I am guessing the bosch number is the hardware number and the fiat number contains the software.
I am guessing some of these will be interchangeable accept the ecu's with an EGR valve.
The big question is, which fiat oe number is for an engine with an EGR valve and which one isn't?

Hi Sparkymart,

Perhaps I should have confirmed that the ECU details supplied by me, relate to an engine with thermal starter, without EGR, as mentioned in your opening post.

Do you have a copy of eLearn for the x244? If not I would recommend a purchase, or download from this forum downloads section.

Your list of Fiat ECU codes is repetitive, and only contains three discrete numbers.

I cannot see why a 4x4 vehicle should require a different ECU.

The following list is quoted from an online version of Fiat eLearn, but is cropped as you can see. As far as it goes, it matches my CD copy.

"Currently available versions are:
  • 2.8 JTD engine with Heat - flange with EGR;
  • 2.8 JTD with Heat - flange without EGR;
  • 2.8 JTD with thermal starter without EGR.
  • 2.8 JTD with thermal starter with EGR.
  • 2.8 JTD engine with Heat - flange with VGT, without EGR;
  • 2.8 JTD with thermal starter with VGT, w
... DATA ERROR - CROPPED TEXT "

Mapping three versions of the ECU into six engine versions is an academic exercise, unless you cannot obtain the required version. Neither of the VGT models has EGR, so you could speculate that if the same ECU can control flame starter or heat flange, then it would fit. Who knows, perhaps some knowledgeable person can explain?

Thanks for that , it seems like there arn't many 2.8s with an egr. I have obtained an ecu (1337648080) and immobilizer with keys from a seller on ebay, the seller confirmed that it was from a 2003 without egr.
I have just downloaded the eLearn x244 , just trying to get it to work, will be very informative . Once I have everything connected I will post the results.
Thanks Again.

Thanks for the update.
