Hi all,
I have a 2000 2.8 idtd Ducato that is running fine and well. However, I am getting the smell of the engine through in the cab. Sometimes it can be quite strong, not sure if its fumes as its the general smell of the engine. I've read that there could be leak in the pipe from the EGR valve, I am assuming that the EGR is at the back of the engine? Or does a van of this age have a pollen filter? I am not sure if it does. The smell gets worse when you put the cab fan on ( which makes sense)

Has anyone had a similar issue and been able to fix it?

Cheers :D

Cannot help with a Ducato but I have it on my Skoda car (a quite common problem with Skodas). The fault is with the engine breather. It is linked by a pipe and non return valve to the air intake pipe. When it leaks or the NRV goes faulty the engine smell is noticed in the vehicle.

Might be worth a quick look in your case.

Have you considered the possibility of a failing ventilation fan resistor?

An engine should not smell other than at the exhaust, unless it is overheating, or leaking oil is getting onto hot exhaust parts.

The fresh air inlet is under the grille at the base of the windscreen. The rear edge of the bonnet has a rubber sealing strip, which should prevent any fumes leaking into the ventilation inlet, as well as keeping water out of the engine bay. Have any drain hoses for the area below the grille become detached inside the engine bay?

Thanks for the replies. Something to now go on.

You engine won’t have a EGR valve, mine is the same, in traffic I have to put it on recycle. Not found the cause yet.
