Thermal valve on Injector

The injector pump on my 1999 2.8 IdTD has a thermal valve that retards the injector timing a bit when it warms up, it doesn't appear to be moving at all. It's probably been like this for a while.
Is it important? The only issue I have is that it sometimes seems to lose power slightly when very hot. The replacement from Fiat is pricey so I dont want to replace it if there's not going to any benefit. Could I fix it in the warm position?

Re: Thermal valve on Injector

I had a similar device on a Talbot Express (Peugeot J5) many years ago.

My ancient memory could be wrong.

I thought that the injection was retarded for starting, and advanced as the engine warmed up.

Does not the device on your 2.8 idTD include an ignition switch operated electrical heater? If so, is there 12V at the pump with the ignition switched on?

Re: Thermal valve on Injector

All of these start assist devices that I have seen are either "normal timing" or cold start timing and should revert to "normal" timing within a very few minutes of engine starting.

Re: Thermal valve on Injector

Yes, it's electrically operated and has 12v with the ignition on. I assumed it advanced the timing when it was cold due to the increased burn time. Either way does it make much difference?

It will make a difference if it is in the wrong position when engine is warm.

Only makes a difference to starting if temperate is well below zero degrees centigrade
