Hello all! I am having some trouble with my 2003 Fiat Ducato, which has the 2.8JTD, and a ZF automatic.
When I shift from park to reverse, or when I hit the brakes when driving, I get a loud clunk noise from the left hand side of the engine bay.
I have checked and replaced my rear engine mount, and the noise is still there.
Any other common wear issues that could cause that problem?
My engine also shudders a bit on shutoff, so I am wondering if the side engine mounts could be suspect.
this vehicle is relatively high mileage, at a bit over 400,000km.

Thanks.

in NZ, and its nearing its next yearly inspection so I'm trying to sort it.
I have watched while a friend cycled between drive and reverse, and the engine did move a little bit as it went clunk, but i am unsure how much movement it is supposed to have.
Where abouts is the left engine mount on these, and how hard is it to replace?

Thank you varsecrazy I was too brief.
Check the driveshaft rubber boot on the outboard joint. If pierced by a stone etc. It will lose it's lubricant and wear rapidly.
Wear can take place in the spline at the outboard end of the hubnut comes loose.
Angular clearance at the diff end should not be more than say 1 degree.

Thank you for all the advice so far.
So it is more likely to be my axle/cv joints than my upper gearbox mount?
Further details, it only goes clunk when going into reverse or braking, there is no clunk when going into drive or driving forwards, which is why I was suspecting the mount more than the axle.
Is it possible to visually inspect the mount for wear?
Currently without my big trolley jack, so trying to problem solve what I can without jacking it up.

I have a video of it happening, if I could figure how to upload one...
