Hello there, buongiorno even,
You might have have heard this sort of thing before - on my 2008 X250 2.3 motorhome, the engine management light comes on intermittently.
No effect on performance, consumption or anything else obvious. It's been doing it for 3 years (yes, I know) but not when MOT being done. Had it checked/reset a couple of times but no work done and no lasting resolution. The light first came on in 2010 when it was just over 2 years old and the EGR was replaced, just nicely out of warranty.
It was then lightless until mid-2017 when I was coming down from a mountain pass and had to brake big style.
I don't want to get into one of those replace-everything situations so I have been using fuel additive to try and clean the system but the light keeps saying 'hello'.
Does anyone have any idea what might be happening pleeeease?

Hi Varescrazy,
Thanks for the response - no idea other than the first one must have been the EGR. I'm guessing the problem is so minor that it doesn't show itself clearly. Just wondering if there's a common issue that gives this sort of thing?

Hi Svenno445

The engine light is a legal requirement to show that a fault may be causing the emissions of the engine to exceed the standard. It doesn't necessarily trigger a reduced power mode, so the van may drive normally.

If the engine light has been illuminated, a fault code will have been stored and can be read. If the fault doesn't recur, after 5 or 6 engine starts the warning light will no longer show but the code is still stored.

Unfortunately, the code alone isn't precise enough to tell you "replace X and all will be well". However, the code + experience + further tests will narrow down the problem.

Don't know if you've got anywhere with the problem but if not I would suggest you think about the throttle body and its electrically operated valve. My 2010 Ducato first showed the engine warning light on the day of the MOT earlier this year! A friendly garage ran a diagnostic and error code showed throttle body fault. After a bit of searching on this and other motorhome forums I came across a very helpful guy, (whose name I can't recall now but will find and publish) who repeatedly answered queries about engine fault light with his opinion that the throttle body on Ducatos pre-2011 were poor and liable to fail. Try and get a code and see if it points to throttle body. If so I reckon its a good chance you'll have same problem -water falling onto it and corroding the interface between valve body and motor unit. Not a difficult job to replace and I can give more info if needed.
