Hi there,

I have a Fiat Ducato campervan conversion. Its a 2007, with a 2.2 multijet 100 engine (I'm told this is the same as a transit?) and has around 109k miles on it. The van is fantastic, but has developed a bit of a fault that I really hope you experts will be able to help me with!

Over the last few months it has had a little bit of a rough idle and is 'hunting'. It's an intermittent fault, though I can't particularly tie it to any condition (it sometimes seems just as bad after a long run as when it first started, however is generally worse when starting from cold).

Recently, this rough idle has got worse, and the van has also started cutting out 10-20 seconds after starting the engine, unless I give it a little bit of throttle to keep the revs up.

Things that have been tried:
- EGR Valve replaced (there was at one point an EGR fault on the dash)
- Replace fuel rail pressure sensor and relief valve

All of which seem to have made no difference.

The garage I am dealing with have been great in the past, but I can't shake the feeling that they are simply trying a trial-and-error approach to resolving the issue, which will likely end up costing me a lot of money in the long-run! I've been informed that the next things to try are the Throttle Body, The ECU and the injectors, which could obviously get very expensive.

Other things to note:
- I have seen in the past (when doing the North Coast 500) an error code related to 'Minor Fuel Leak', however have been told by the garage that there seems to be no such leak.
- The van is fitted with a Split Charge relay system for the campervan conversion. I have temporarily removed the leisure battery from the back, and the problem persisted.

If anyone can perhaps suggest root causes for this and ways in which I could test, I would be tremendously grateful. I love this van but it is starting to cost me a fortune!

Thanks!
Sam

I have no idea about code for minor fuel leak- do you have any details?

Did the start of this problem coincide with a new fuel filter being fitted?

Air could be being drawn in with the fuel.

When the problem shows it's head someone would be sensible to use a scan tool to monitor the fuel rail pressure.

Hi Jackwhoo,

Thanks for getting back to me.

The code for the minor fuel leak was p0094. I haven't seen this for some time, so may be a red-herring, though it appeared several times on the NC500 (when the van was getting a lot of use, had a lot of stress put on it, and, in classic Scottish fashion, was subjected to a lot of rain).

I'm not completely sure when the problem started, I had a full service done on the van when I first bought it (1 year ago), which included a replacement fuel filter. I'd say that the problem did start not too long after that, but it's possible it simply was there all along and I just never noticed it.

Can you perhaps recommend an ODBII reader that would give the fuel pressure on this van? I have a cheap bluetooth one, along with the Torque app, though I believe (I would have to check), that this isn't giving me fuel pressure readings.

Thanks again!

This may be applicable.

The small fuel leak code looks to appear if the detected fuel rail pressure drops below a set figure. Could be caused by air in fuel.

Was the p0094 code was coming on under heavy load or at idle

May be able to reccomend a reader that will show live data

Hi jackwhoo,

Thanks so much for your suggestions and sorry for the delay in replying to you, it has been an extraordinarily busy week!

I will do a little bit more research to see if I can find a reader that will give the Fuel Pressure on this van, I checked again and my cheap bluetooth one doesn't seem to be sending that.

Once I have a new reader, would I simply be looking for fluctuations in fuel pressure?

Just to be clear, the P0094 code hasn't been seen for a few months, so may or may not be related to the issue, however it came on under high load. I remember once thinking something sounded a little off about the engine (a rattle iirc). I revved the engine a little, and the code came on the dash.

I will investigate a new reader and post the results here for fuel pressure. If anyone can recommend a reader in the meantime, however, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again, this is really helpful!
