OMG

I hope it cost next to nothing.

9000km in 13years I'm not sure about that.

If the above true its unlikely to have had an an oil change for 10 years, or coolant change or any servicing at all.

How did it get back from France?

Thick grey smoke

Could be burning engine oil , smoke will be grey/blue and smell like burning engine oil.

If smoke is more white and acrid likely unburned diesel fuel.

Could be leaking head gasket allowing coolant into cylinder causing steam in exhaust.

So check fluid levels.
Check air filter and inlet pipes , something may be living in there.

Some of these engines have a wierd cold start device in the air inlet that heats diesel to vapour that is then sucked into engine to aid starting in cold weather. Make sure this is turned off and is actually off , if it's stuck on that could cause exhaust fumes.

I strongly suggest finding out how much it will cost to return to a road worthy condition before spending any money on it.

The tyres may be so old as to be very dangerous!

Are you mechanically competent to do all the work yourself?

On less negative note.

The iveco engine is generally durable and will run to very high mileage if looked after.

They do smoke until warmed up to normal running temperature.

If the engine starts without loads of cranking it's probably ok.

Check no water in fuel filter , drain a bit out of bottom of filter if there is a drain plug

Check crankcase breather not blocked , if it is pressure will build up in crankcase causing problems.
