Hi everyone,
I,m new to this site so here go,s. Im having a problem getting
all TDC timing pins to locate where they should do, on my Fiat
Ducato 2.3 120 jtd multijet 2008. The crankshaft and 5ml pin in cam
sprocket are fine but the 2 upper pins that sit on top of camshaft just
wont drop in to lock in cam itself . My only thought is that whoever
changed timing belt last on tensioning belt with cam sprocket undone has
moved said sprocket out by a degree. I have tried BTDC and just after but
no luck. Can please somebody give some advise.

Sorry just reread your post.
Please ignor
What I posted and have now deleted.

It must be very tricky to tighten cam sprocket bolt to 90nm without disturbing sprocket at all.
So to answer your question , yes probably got moved about 1 degree.

If you want to try and get it closer than 1 degree out go ahead..... but When tightening cam sprocket bolt counter hold the sprocket with a sprocket holding tool the locking tools are not capable of holding the sprocket or cam shafts while you tighten to 90nm the sprocket bolt.

I may have miss read your post again.

Are you saying the camshaft locking tool won't go into cam shafts at all? In any position you try?

Hi yes that's it , its frustrating the hec out of me. Once the crank locking pin and camshaft
pulley pin in place the other 2 pins should just drop in place but no luck.

Use a small torch to look down hole where timing pins should drop down see if you can see holes pins should fit into.
Sometimes a little gentle finger pressure on top of pins may help.

Where did you buy timing tools?

Not for this engine but for vw pd diesels I have had tools from ebay that didn't fit.

Yep tried all that this afternoon , i will have to rethink it , but many thanks for your help.

On the crank sprocket there is a stamped line , What position is that line at TOP DEAD CENTRE, describe line as if on a clock face

Morning, crankshaft is pretty much 10 o,clock as the clock goes and
camshaft between 12/1 o,clock . sorry for crude description.
There seems to be no reference marks on outer casing either.

Hey jackwhoo
Just looked back at last threads you've sent, you asked about locking
pins and where I got them from. I think I got them off ebay , and they
laser locking pins specifically Ducato jtd engines.

The line on crank sprocket should be as you describe it, so I think you are getting crank tool in correct position.

Laser tools pretty good.

Are both pins on cam lock tool same diameter?

Have you tried "feeling" down the cam tool holes with a thin screwdriver for the locking holes ?

At this point(If engine been running fine with old belt) I would be thinking of just fitting new belt kit and water pump using just the tools for crank and cam sprocket.

Can belts are made to very high specs , use a decent brand of belt kit though.

Hey Jackwhoo,
Thanks for your threads on locking pins, nice to know with
naff things going on in this country of ours people still take time to
help others , so thanks again.
Been outside having another look , and as you have suggested used
something narrower down cam lock pin hole only this time took cam
sprocket/pulley censer pin plus crank lock pin out and using a small mirror
with torch managed to look down hole while bringing engine to TDC . You
can see clearly where locking pin is supposed to drop but does not, not
fully anyway ( not sure whether a small tap would help ). I have also run
end of pin in drill just to clean up end. You also mention drill bits being used instead of these locking pins that I have that look good but just don't fit
properly. Anyway to cut a very long story short these camshaft locking pins
just don't want to do the job they were intended to do , unless of course
someone on this forum can prove me otherwise.

It is a pleasure to help :)

If You can see the holes in cam shaft that pins are meant to drop in while the crank at tdc.

I think you are safe to now ignor your camshaft locking pins.

Just use your crank lock and sprocket lock.

Fit your belt kit.

Remove cam sprocket lock.

Tension belt tensioner.

Remove crank lock.

Rotate crank set number of times given in videos ,

check/reset belt tension

Relock crank

See if cam sprocket lock tool is within a knats whisker of fitting, or even 5 knats whiskers.

If you are super keen you can even use your touch and mirror to look at camshaft holes.

But I would bet it will be fine and I don't bet!

Let's us know.

Ps was van running fine with old belt?

important DO NOT loosen the cam sprocket retaining bolt as your camshaft locking pins don't fit.
