Spent 3 months in portugal recently on the way down through spains mountains engine started to stutter in 4th gear on gradients. Eventually after an hour seemed to clear and ran normally for next 10 weeks but not a lot of mileage done as its a motorhome.
On the run back home 1500 miles in 3 days it progressively got worse to the point it was stuttering about 70% of the time as i was approching home generally on a slight gradient or if engine was working hard.
Mileage is 60k
Any ideas where to start would prefer to do basic checks myself
Thanks

Fuel filter blocked? Seems it can't flow enough on high demand.

Ian.

Thanks That sounds the most logical first step i do my own servicing but have not yet replaced the filter.
There is a large metal filter on bulkhead I'll change when lockdown eases dont think there are any in line paper types.
How about the injectors when are they changed its had regular redex throught it
Does an engine of this age have a diagnostics port cant recall seeing one

Check the lift pump in the tank. It is protected by a plastic mesh that can get blocked by rust and dirt in the tank. The pump may need replacing if a few segments of the motor windings are u/s

One thing at a time. No point in doing injectors until they start to give trouble.
2000 model does not have the OBD2 port like later ones. Probably has a 3 pin one.
Get the filter changed and see where you are.
Ian.

Check if you can that any tank breather is not restricted, not likely to be fully blocked, as it will run on the flat OK, but working hard may just be a step too far for it and a partial tank vacuum can rstrict fuel flow out from the tank.

Thanks for suggestions guys its very frustrating as MH is now in storage lockdown
You are right of course Ian about taking one step at a time

Is this the 2.8 JTD or the IDtd? Any lights coming on if the JTD? Does it happen when it's under pressure only?

This is the IDtd as you term it the version prior to the JTD.
From what i can gather a basic reliable engine with few frills to go wrong
The stuttering only happens when under a load such as up a long slow incline when trying to maintain speed or when accelerating in 4th to get up to 5th.
It has progressively got worse and happens much more frequently

The idTD is their terminology for the engine not mine! It means its not an electronic injection issue anyway. I would suspect fuel starvation then, Check the tank and the strainer, Can be a load of gunk there and when under pressure it just can't draw fuel as the pick up gets clogged. Any dodgy joints in the fuel supply line wher air could be sucked in?

Hi.

You may have water in the fuel?

Yeah, change fuel filter.
My fuel filter housing is a plastic UFI version.
Best to use the special tool when changing filter.

It allows torquing up the housing to the correct spec without buckling the housing.

Is your fuel housing plastic or do yuo have a metal screw on type fuel filter?

Have finally got round to changing fuel filter the one in situ was a Fram P4183 ordered a fram filter from europarts which i thought was the same.
On comparision the old one had a screw in electrical probe in base heater ??/water detector ??
The new only had basic screw tap.
Decided to fit anyway as wanted to see if it would run without stuttering.
Sucess runs much much better without problem under load accelerating etc
I cannot see to source a fram P4183 in UK
Question what is the screw in probe and can i run the engine ok with just the basic filter
Can anyone suggest an alternative brand of filter

If you unscrew plug that came with new filter does your sensor not just screw in ?

No its a different thread theres about a choice of 12 on europarts site

Thanks for link they should know if they would answer phone
The van runs perfect since installing filter without water sensor. Ithink i have installed the later jtd filter on the idtd engine but the water sensor isnt vital

I had the same issue in the winter in Greece. Motorhome wouldn't climb without studdering. It seemed to be worse at higher RPM's even when stationary and revving the engine. A new fuel filter fixed everything.

The water sensor didn't come with the new filter. I just disregarded it but kept it in the toolbox - just in case... But do drain the filter periodically.

Happy travels!

Sorry for delayed reply

The screw in probe is likely just a water in fuel sensor.
So yes you can just run it with filter you have.
Just drain some fuel from filter via the drain plug once per year to make sure water doesn't build up in bottom of filter.
